Director, Financial Control and Compliance – UNSW
UNSW is seeking a dynamic Director of Financial Control and Compliance to lead financial control, governance and compliance across UNSW and its controlled entities. Remuneration: Competitive total package. Location: Kensington, NSW (Hybrid working model).
Responsibilities
* Lead and manage the overall financial control, governance and compliance strategies for UNSW and its controlled entities, ensuring statutory reporting obligations are met and that all underlying accounting transactions comply with Australian Accounting Standards and NSW Treasury guidance and the Australian equivalent of IFRS.
* Collaborate with assurance functions within UNSW and with broader sector assurance bodies including Audit Office NSW and NSW Treasury to enable effective financial governance.
* Provide strategic technical financial advice to senior business leaders and influence policy stances across the sector.
* Lead and manage financial control, governance and compliance, supporting statutory reporting obligations and ensuring compliance with relevant standards.
* Oversee international tax and consolidation of multiple entities; support responses for ICAC, GIPA and PID compliance; drive financial policy and process optimisation.
* Develop and implement internal financial control frameworks and internal fiscal policies and procedures.
* Develop and implement systems and processes to support local and international tax compliance.
* Demonstrate analytical and conceptual thinking to diagnose complex business issues and provide innovative, practical solutions in a timely manner.
* Communicate effectively with stakeholders; inform, persuade and negotiate with a wide range of stakeholders.
* Develop internal partnerships delivering high-quality financial support and advisory services to business units; build a capable finance team.
* Lead multi-team performance and staff development; manage risk and governance improvements.
Qualifications and Experience
* Tertiary qualification and CA or CPA designation with substantial experience managing multi-faceted financial/statutory accounting functions in a large and complex organisation (Higher Education experience is not essential).
* Significant experience planning and managing statutory audits in a large complex organisation.
* Extensive experience developing and implementing internal financial control frameworks in support of statutory obligations and internal policies.
* Extensive experience in development and implementation of systems and processes for local and international tax compliance.
* Analytical and conceptual thinking with the ability to diagnose sensitive and complex business issues and provide innovative and practical solutions on a timely basis.
* Excellent communication, interpersonal and stakeholder management skills, with a demonstrated ability to inform, persuade and negotiate with diverse stakeholders.
* Proven skills in developing internal business partnership services delivering high-quality financial support and advisory services.
* Extensive team management experience to manage multi-team performance and develop staff capabilities.
* Knowledge and understanding of the higher education sector.
