Position Objective


The School Facilities Maintenance Officer supports the safe, clean, and effective operation of the school by
maintaining buildings, grounds, and equipment. The role responds to routine and urgent maintenance
needs, assists with school operations and events, and ensures all work is completed in line with safety
requirements and school policies.


Key Responsibilities


* Carry out general maintenance and minor repairs across school facilities
* Respond to routine and urgent maintenance requests
* Conduct regular checks of buildings and grounds to identify safety or maintenance issues
* Maintain school grounds and outdoor areas
* Assist with room set-ups and school events as required
* Use tools and equipment safely and appropriately
* Work collaboratively with school staff and contractors
* Follow all workplace health and safety requirements

Selection Criteria


Essential

1. Basic knowledge of building maintenance, including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and mechanical
systems

2. Ability to safely operate hand and power tools and related equipment
3. Physical fitness and capacity to undertake a range of manual tasks safely
4. Completion of secondary schooling or equivalent
5. Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and respond promptly to routine and

urgent requests
6. Demonstrated use of initiative, responsibility, and practical problem-solving
7. Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work constructively with staff,

contractors, and the school community
8. Hold, or be willing to obtain, a First Aid Certificate


Desirable

1. Experience in facilities, grounds maintenance, landscaping, or horticulture, including the care of
playing fields and gardens

2. Knowledge of aquaponics systems
3. Medium Rigid Drivers Licence, or willingness to obtain
4. Experience using chemicals safely in accordance with industry standards
5. Familiarity with workplace safety systems and procedures


Appointment Conditions


The employee must:

* Obtain a valid Working with Children Clearance (the “Ochre Card”) and a satisfactory Police Security
Check and maintain these clearances for the duration of employment
* Hold a valid Australian Drivers Licence
* Follow Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) requirements and school policies


This job description is intended as a framework for performance review conducted by the Facilities Manager,
who reserves the right to amend roles, responsibilities, and requirements as necessary to meet the operational
needs of the school.
Your performance and remuneration package will be reviewed at three months and again at six months
following commencement. These reviews may or may not result in a salary adjustment, at the discretion of
the Business Manager.
Superannuation Guarantee contributions at the current rate of 12% will be paid by the school in addition to
salary.
The Essington School offers employment benefits, including reduced tuition fees for family members and
increased stand-down periods.
