Hawkesbury campus with flexible working arrangements.
Salary: $95,777 – $102,659 per annum, plus 17% Super and Leave Loading.

The Opportunity
This role supports Western's ecological research programs by ensuring the smooth operation of the eddy covariance flux tower and experimental climate facilities located on and around the Hawkesbury campus. You will play a key role in enabling researchers to investigate plant, soil, water, and carbon dynamics under varying climate conditions.

You will be responsible for maintaining environmental sensors, mechanical equipment, logging systems, and associated infrastructure used to collect high-quality environmental data. Your work will directly support rainfall manipulation experiments, long-term ecosystem monitoring, and the measurement of carbon and water fluxes across native and managed landscapes.

As part of the broader Technical Services team, you will contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, uphold safety standards, and provide instruction to staff and students accessing field-based facilities. This role suits someone who enjoys technical problem solving, fieldwork, and contributing to impactful research.

What Success Looks Like:
Operate, maintain, and calibrate environmental sensors, logging systems, and mechanical equipment across the eddy flux and climate facilities.
Deliver technical guidance to staff and students on the safe and effective use of field-based research infrastructure.
Ensure reliable data collection by performing routine assessments, troubleshooting equipment issues, and conducting structural and functional inspections.
Collect, quality‑control, and prepare environmental datasets for researchers in line with project needs.
Contribute to fieldwork activities including plant and soil sampling, rainfall manipulation experiments, and maintenance of facility infrastructure.

About You
Tertiary qualifications in a relevant environmental, ecological, or technical discipline, with considerable related experience.
Experience with instrumentation used in environmental and climate research, such as infrared gas analysers, data loggers, soil sensors, and rainfall manipulation systems.
Ability to analyse environmental datasets using appropriate statistical tools (R and/or Python).
Strong planning and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work safely at heights and undertake physically demanding field-based tasks.
Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to document procedures and coordinate activities across multiple stakeholders.
