Job Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an HCA to work within the Pain Management Service, in Burnley Hospital.

Within Our Team You Will

Carry out assigned tasks involving direct care in support of and supervised by, a Registered Nurse to relieve trained nurses of the non-nursing duties
Work collaboratively and cooperatively with others in the Pain team to meet the needs of the patients which may involve supporting group sessions.
At the direction of the Registered Nurses assist and provide support in multi professional clinics within the pain management unit and across IMPReS.
Other duties include administrative tasks e.g. reception cover, housekeeping, ensuring the smooth running of the pain unit and service in providing support for all Clinicians in clinics, setting up clinics and treatment sessions, ensuring stock levels are maintained and supporting staff in the set up and delivery of group sessions.

Main duties of the job

Involve patients and carers/relatives in the delivery of care.
Provide reassurance and support to patients and carers/family.
Work collaboratively with others in the department to ensure that patients' needs are met.
Recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations.
Provide escort and transfer for patients, with low dependency, as directed.
Prepare and set up clinics, including trays and trolleys, treatment and examination rooms.
Tidy and clean rooms and equipment as directed.
Chaperone patients when required.
Assist patients' to undress/dress if required, maintaining their dignity at all times.
During procedures, provide assistance to medical and nursing staff when requested.
Undertake agreed clinical tasks, under the direct supervision of a qualified nurse.
Report as soon as practicable, all hazards and defects to the Senior Nurse on Duty.
Assist in set up and delivery of pain groups and programmes as directed.
Reception cover and associated duties as directed by admin manager.
Booking of patient appointments using the appropriate systems including ERS (Choose & Book) & Cerner Millenium.

An opportunity has arisen for a HCA to join the Pain Management Service at Burnley General Hospital. It will be 15 hours per week over flexible days, not including weekends or bank holidays.

The Pain Management Service, at BGH is a busy, modern unit with a professional but friendly team delivering high standards of care. We are looking for highly enthusiastic, motivated and committed HCA to join our forward thinking and ever developing team. You should have good communication, numeracy and literacy skills. You should be able to work effectively as part of a team and deal with complex sensitive information in a professional manner.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

Communication

Establish and maintain relationships with patients/clients, relatives, friends and staff, and participate in supporting patients.
Attend ward/department meetings as required, to ensure an awareness of developments within the work area.
Maintain an effective communication network; both verbal, written and electronic, keep registered practitioners informed.
Assist in maintaining, recording and storing information, including patient records, in line with Trust policy.
Meet and welcome patients/ relatives and other visitors and familiarise them with the environment.
Maintain good relationships with team members, and visitors to the ward/department. Provide assistance when necessary.
Operate and input to computerised systems within the unit.
Help maintain materials, equipment and stock, reporting problems and defects to professional staff.
Provide information to enable the effectiveness of care to be evaluated and records maintained.
Ensure relevant reports and results are available for consultations.
Answer the telephone, take messages and pass onto the appropriate person.

Training And Development

Participate in Personal Develop Review. In discussion with line manager, develop an annual Personal Development Plan, to identify Training and Development needs, in line with personal and organisational objectives and linked to the Knowledge and Skills Framework.
All employees have a duty to attend annual mandatory training sessions as required by the Trust.
Sustain and improve own development by using opportunities provided by the Trust.
Assist with Local Induction programmes for newly appointed staff.
Assist in training new staff in the care and maintenance of equipment

Organisational Responsibilities

Ensure compliance with policies, procedures and clinical guidelines for self and others.
Report any concern regarding patient care.
Participate in patient and public involvement activities.
Support people's equality, diversity and rights.
Refrain from the wilful misuse, or interference, with anything provided in the interests of health and safety and any action which might endanger yourself and others.

Professional Responsibilities

To comply with East Lancashire NHS Trust Policies and Procedures.
Liaise closely with medical and nursing staff, and associated departments, to ensure that clinics and sessions are conducted effectively and efficiently.
Use, in a proper and safe manner, the equipment and facilities provided.
Report as soon as practicable, all accidents and untoward occurrences and ensure that the appropriate form is completed
Ensure the effective and efficient use of resources.
Carry out post-consultation clerical duties when directed, such as making follow-up appointments and arranging patient transport.
At the conclusion of the clinic, ensure that all case notes, X-rays, etc., are returned to the appropriate department or clerical staff.
Order medical and non-medical stock, maintaining a cost-effective approach.
Ensure all equipment is in good working order, arranging repair when necessary.
Ensure the tidiness and cleanliness of all clinical rooms, examination rooms, store cupboards and sub-waiting areas.

Essential And Desirable

Essential criteria

Willingness and ability to undertake NVQ 2 or equivalents experience as NVQ level 2
Clear and accurate written and verbal communication.
Provide reasonable flexibility in terms of hours

Desirable criteria

6 month caring experience
