The role
Solution Architect – Autonomous Fleet Management Systems (FMS)
Location: Perth (Flexible)
Solution Architect – Mining Fleet Management & Autonomy Solutions
Location: Perth, WA (Other Locations Considered)
Summary
DXC Technology is seeking an experienced Solution Architect to support a major mining autonomy program. In this role, you will be responsible for translating business requirements into well-structured solution designs that guide delivery teams from concept through to build readiness. You will work closely with the Product Owner to understand business needs, define solution approaches, and ensure that proposed solutions are viable, scalable, and aligned with program objectives. You will play a critical role in bridging business intent and delivery execution by producing high-level and detailed functional solution designs, which are subsequently refined into technical designs by the Software Architect and executed by development teams.
Key Responsibilities
1. Requirements Interpretation & Engagement
- Review and interpret business requirements provided by the Product Owner.
- Collaborate with the Product Owner and stakeholders to clarify scope, assumptions, and constraints.
- Ensure a strong understanding of the business problem, operational context, and desired outcomes.
2. High-Level Solution Design (Concept Phase)
- Develop High-Level Solution Designs (HLDs) that define:
- Functional behaviour of the solution
- Key workflows and interactions
- Integration touchpoints and data flows (at a conceptual level)
- Present solution options, trade-offs, and recommendations to stakeholders.
- Ensure solutions align with architectural principles, program constraints, and business case objectives.
3. Estimation Alignment
- Support the technical team in understanding the solution scope to enable initial engineering estimates.
- Collaborate with delivery teams to validate that proposed solutions are:
- Feasible within time and cost constraints
- Aligned with the approved business case
- Participate in refinement discussions where required to adjust the solution approach.
4. Detailed Solution Design (Functional Design Phase)
- Produce Detailed Solution Designs (DSDs) where estimates align with the business case.
- Clearly articulate:
- End-to-end functional flows
- User/system interactions
- Business rules and processing logic
- Key integration behaviours (at a functional level)
- Ensure the design is sufficiently detailed to enable downstream technical design without ambiguity.
5. Handover to Software Architecture
- Provide a structured handover of the Detailed Solution Design to the Software Architect, who will produce the Detailed Technical Design.
- Support the Software Architect by:
- Explaining design intent and business context
- Clarifying functional behaviours and assumptions
- Ensure alignment between functional solution design and technical implementation approach.
6. Governance & Design Integrity
- Participate in architecture and design reviews to ensure alignment to:
- Enterprise architecture standards
- Program design principles
- Industry best practices
- Maintain traceability between business requirements, solution design, and delivery outcomes.
7. Stakeholder Communication
- Communicate solution designs clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Facilitate walkthroughs of solution designs with delivery teams and client stakeholders.
- Act as the primary functional design authority within the delivery lifecycle.
Skills & Experience Core Experience
- Proven experience as a Solution Architect or equivalent role delivering complex software or systems solutions.
- Strong ability to translate business requirements into structured solution designs.
- Experience working in large-scale, multi-team delivery environments.
Architecture & Delivery Understanding
- Solid understanding of:
- Software development lifecycles (Agile preferred)
- Architectural concepts (e.g., integration patterns, distributed systems, event-driven systems)
- Ability to engage effectively with technical teams without owning low-level technical design.
Communication & Analysis
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and facilitation capability.
- Ability to present complex solution concepts in a clear and structured manner.
Highly Desirable
- Experience in mining systems, fleet management, autonomy, or industrial platforms.
- Experience working in multi-vendor or client-facing environments.
- Familiarity with cloud-based platforms and modern enterprise architectures.
Key Interfaces
- Product Owner (primary input source for requirements)
- Software Architect (primary downstream consumer of solution designs)
- Development Teams
- Client Architecture and Delivery Teams
Success Measures
- Clear, well-structured solution designs that enable accurate estimation
- Strong alignment between business requirements and delivered capability
- Minimal rework due to ambiguity or misinterpretation
- Effective collaboration across architecture and delivery teams
