Avant Law is a national specialist law firm looking for a Special Counsel to join our team in Sydney, working closely with specialist Legal Team Manager, John Kamaras, and joining a team of purpose-driven lawyers. This is an opportunity for an experienced health law lawyer to join the Avant Law (NSW) Professional Conduct team. We seek an applicant with experience in managing professional conduct and coronial matters on behalf of healthcare professionals and medical practices and has a genuine interest in mentoring the next generation of lawyers in this specialised area of law.

This is a full-time permanent position based out of our Sydney office with hybrid working arrangements.

Key responsibilities

* Delivery of high quality, timely legal advice and services in respect of Professional Conduct matters to Avant Insurance claims managers and Avant's members.
* Conduct of own file load and mentoring the Professional Conduct team in accordance with the KPIs, ensuring billing targets are met and high-quality legal services are provided.
* Providing oral and written legal advice and representation to members and Avant Insurance Claims Managers concerning professional conduct matters including before the Health Care Complaints Commission, Medical Council of NSW, NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NCAT), Australian Medical Board, the Office of the Health Ombudsman, Medicare and Professional Service Review matters, as well as Coronial investigations and inquests.
* Representation of members in legal proceedings, including preparing for and attending court, tribunals or inquiries and through clear and persuasive advocacy achieving the best outcome for the member.
* Providing general medico-legal advice to Avant members and Claims Managers.
* Provision and supervision of lawyers with a range of PQE experience to deliver sustainable, timely and efficient legal services to achieve the best possible outcomes as well as reduction in cycle times, accurate reserve and reduction in external legal costs.
* Assistance with the supervision, mentoring and development of junior lawyers to enable career development for staff within the Avant Law team.
* Ensuring the management of matters in accordance with agreed protocols, standards and procedures of Avant Law and professional and ethical standards with documented standards and procedures consistently applied.

To be successful in this role you will have

* 10+ years' PQE with demonstrated post admission experience in professional conduct related litigation and criminal law experience is preferred.
* Relevant tertiary legal qualifications, with a current unsupervised practising certificate as a Solicitor in NSW.
* Previous experience in conducting all phases of professional conduct cases.
* Demonstrated health law knowledge/background.
* Excellent communication and time management skills.
* The ability to mentor and support junior team members.
* Good computer literacy and competency to work in an electronic document management environment.
* Strong time management and multi-tasking skills.
* Proactive in developing relationships and understanding and balancing member, business and team requirements.
