Overview

We have a unique and exciting opportunity for a Communications Manager to shape the voice and global presence of one of Monash University's flagship international research programs in water, sanitation and sustainability. Based within the Monash Sustainable Development Institute (MSDI), this role leads the design and delivery of bold, strategic communications that bring the transformative work of the Revitalising Informal Settlements and their Environments (RISE) program to life — across Australia, Indonesia and Fiji.

In this dynamic and influential role, you'll work closely with senior researchers, policy leaders, community partners and international collaborators to develop integrated communication and engagement strategies that elevate RISE's impact on a global stage. With a high level of autonomy, you'll lead a nimble communications function and play a central role in amplifying research outcomes, sharing powerful human stories, and driving connection across diverse audiences — from local communities to governments, global media and donors.

Key Responsibilities

* Develop and lead strategic communications for RISE that elevate the program's visibility and global reputation, ensuring alignment with institutional branding and partner priorities. (e.g. oversee social media strategy and content, coordinate media opportunities, and manage updates to the RISE website.)
* Manage the creation and delivery of high-impact content across digital and print platforms that translates complex research into compelling narratives for diverse audiences. (e.g. produce newsletters, curate video content and website articles, and support submissions for awards and recognition.)
* Provide high-level communication advice and support to senior leaders to strengthen policy engagement, media positioning and RISE's institutional reputation. (e.g. contribute to strategic submissions, donor reports, and briefing materials for high-level engagement.)
* Lead international communications coordination with in-country teams in Indonesia and Fiji, ensuring consistency of messaging and strengthening regional relevance. (e.g. guide and support in-country communications staff, provide editorial oversight, and ensure shared content meets local context and cultural sensitivities.)
* Oversee digital engagement and performance to inform content strategy and optimise audience reach through data and analytics. (e.g. track web and social media metrics, refine SEO strategies, and enhance digital storytelling impact.)
* Coordinate external service providers including designers, media producers, and translators to deliver polished, high-quality communications outputs within scope and budget. (e.g. manage production of digital collateral, videos, and graphic design of major publications such as the Annual Report.)
* Foster internal communication and team cohesion through engaging, inclusive communication practices that support RISE's diverse, global team. (e.g. curate internal newsletters, manage communications-related onboarding / offboarding for staff transitions.)
* Act as a key liaison for strategic stakeholder engagement, working closely with Monash stakeholders and global partners to maximise visibility and alignment. (e.g. maintain regular contact with UMAC, MSDI, DVCRE, and relevant faculties.)
* Manage communication opportunities and risks during high-profile moments, ensuring timely, accurate, and well-positioned communications in response to emerging needs
