The Connecticut Department of Correction (DOC) has a vacancy for a Correctional Electronics Technician at Osborn Correctional Institution in Somers, CT. POSITION DETAILS
This is a full-time, 36.25 hour per week position on first shift. Schedule is Monday-Friday between 7:45am and 3:00pm. This recruitment may be used to fill vacancies throughout State Correctional Facilities as openings occur within the next year. Candidates selected for hire are required to attend a fourteen (14) week training at the CTDOC Training Academy in Cheshire, CT.
Responsibilities
* Maintenance and repair of: Facility door programmable logic controllers (PLC) and interlock systems; Metal detectors; Facility intercom and paging systems; Intrusion alarm systems (i.e. sensors, infrared and microwave); Fence alarms; CT Video Recorders, monitors, and surveillance cameras; Fire alarm systems; Environmental direct digital controls (DDC); Hand held radios, base station radio equipment and repeaters; Man-down alarm sensors and systems; UPS/battery backup units for all security based systems; and Low voltage distribution systems.
* Operate and collaborate with inmates and staff to ensure system integrity and safety.
* Inspect and test electronic security equipment, document results, and coordinate remediation with vendors as needed.

Purpose of Job Class (Nature of Work)
In a Department of Correction facility or district this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks and/or acting as a working supervisor for inmates in the repair, maintenance and installation of various electronic security systems and equipment.
Examples of Duties
Performs technical duties in installation, maintenance, repair and testing of highly technical security surveillance and life safety and alarm systems and communication equipment; fabricates special electronic devices and systems as needed; uses testing/measuring equipment and data to locate malfunctions, diagnose, troubleshoot and repair systems; trains, instructs and supervises inmates assigned to an electronics repair shop; liaises with outside vendors for ordering parts and researching solutions; maintains inventory; may inspect and/or test fire alarm equipment; performs daily key and tool control counts; keeps accurate records; works with Correctional Locksmiths and Maintenance Officers; may supervise inmates; may perform duties in other trades as needed; may respond to emergencies; may operate a motor vehicle; performs related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of electronics concepts; maintenance and repair of electronic security systems; use of specialized test equipment; ability to read schematics and manuals; operate computerized control systems; maintain records; instruct inmates; work under stress; supervisory ability.
Minimum Qualifications
General Experience: Three (3) years of experience in electronics repair. Note: credits determined by facility management based on tech experience.
Special Experience: One (1) year of the General Experience must have been at the highly skilled level.
Substitutions Allowed: College electronics training may substitute for General Experience (15 semester hours equals 1/2 year, up to 2 years for an Associate's degree). Vocational/technical certificate may substitute for 1 year. Military or large facility maintenance experience may substitute on a year-for-year basis.
Special Requirements
Incumbents must be 18+, possess a high school diploma or GED, may be required to complete correctional work training, may be required to respond to after-hours emergencies, may need a valid driver's license, and may travel.
Character Requirements
A thorough background investigation may be conducted before appointment.
Physical Requirements
Good health; ability to perform duties; medical examination including substance screening required after conditional offer.
Working Conditions
May be exposed to danger of injury or assault by inmates and to working with electrical equipment.
