Primary objective
To provide the Northern Territory Government, it's Authorities and Instrumentalities with high quality legal services with respect
to civil litigation matters.
Context statement
The Litigation Division provides legal advice and representation in relation to a wide range of civil litigation, criminal, quasi criminal
and administrative law matters to the Northern Territory Government, its agencies and statutory bodies. This position is in the
Child Protection team, which is tasked with providing advice and representation in respect to child protection matters for the
Department of Children and Families.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide legal advice and legal representation on major, complex or sensitive matters and report to Director of the Division on
the progress of matters.
1. Act as a source of advice and guidance to junior staff of the Division.
2. Maintain a high level of knowledge of relevant areas of the law and of relevant practices and procedures.
3. Provide a high level of service to clients including preparation of court documentation, correspondence and other materials.
4. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing and prepare, and present legal concepts, positions or factual analyses
clearly and correctly.
1. Represent the Solicitor for the Northern Territory, liaise with clients and deal with people and issues in a professional
manner.
1. Organise work to manage priorities effectively and meet deadlines.
2. Accept responsibility for the content and presentation of all documents produced.
3. Provide case management for complex and sensitive outsourced matters.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Admission to practice as a legal practitioner of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory or eligibly for such admission (any
person eligible for admission will be required to be admitted if appointed to this position).
1. Proven experience in the practice of law in the relevant fields.
2. Proven experience in the organisation and management of a personal legal practice involving complex or sensitive cases.
3. Ability to negotiate effectively and to communicate in a professional manner.
4. Ability to manage files to meet client needs and deadlines.
5. Ability to cope with pressure and to work as part of a team
Desirable
1. Knowledge of the Territory, its laws, the workings of government and the development of legal policy in a practical way.
1. Experience in advocacy, mediation and negotiation.
