Mona is seeking an Exhibitions Registrar to join our dedicated Art Management team. The Museum of Old and New Art (Mona) challenges conventions through its eclectic and provocative collection of art and exhibitions, sparking dialogue and redefining the museum experience. This role offers the opportunity to work closely with Mona's Curators and Exhibitions Manager to deliver a variety of temporary exhibition projects, often complex and experimental in nature.
This position is responsible for managing inward loans for Mona's temporary exhibition program, displays and special events. You will be a key collaborator in exhibition working groups, ensuring that lender relationships, carefully planned logistics and related documentation are seamlessly managed for every project.
The Gig:
* Project manage and coordinate artwork loans, including negotiating with lenders and administering Loan Agreements.
* Manage all requirements for the safe and efficient transportation of artworks both nationally and internationally, including liaising with freight agents and lenders to coordinate condition reporting, packing and shipping.
* Apply expert knowledge of museum-standard packing and preventive conservation principles to ensure the safe movement and handling of artworks.
* Collaborate on exhibition project development including schedules and resource planning, working alongside the Exhibitions Manager and broader project teams.
* Participate in risk management working groups to assess proposed design and display along with security provision and invigilation, to mitigate risk to artworks and support lender requirements.
* Oversee and document artwork installation, ensuring lender and artist instructions are planned for and met.
* Participate in the Known Consignor program at Mona, including planning the secure packing and storage of artworks travelling by air freight while ensuring staff awareness, training and compliance.
* Forecast and manage financial activity and insurance specific to inward loans, including budget development and invoice processing, as well as forecasting and reporting on fine art insurance.
* Maintain comprehensive records of all inward loan activity within Mona's Collection Management System (Vernon CMS).
The You:
* Ten years experience in a similar role in a museum or gallery
* Cultural sector tertiary qualifications or extensive knowledge acquired through professional experience.
* Proven project management skills, including planning and staged scheduling, efficient resource management, budgeting and logistics.
* A working knowledge of shipping, including familiarity with Australian Customs and Quarantine regulations for the temporary importation of artworks.
* Highly developed problem-solving skills and the ability to thrive in an environment of change and ambiguity.
* Excellent diplomacy and communication skills with experience managing relationships with Artists, Lenders, Curators, Designers and Conservators.
