Agricultural machinery engineer

Andrew Quigley Contracting Ltd
Posted: 2 June
Offer description

Our progressive Agricultural Contracting business is seeking a qualified Engineer with heavy fabrication and welding expertise. You will bridge the gap between mechanical engineering and practical workshop fabrication. This role focuses on designing, building, and structurally reinforcing heavy agricultural equipment to withstand intense seasonal demands.

You will keep our trucks, trailers, tractors, harvesters, balers, and tillage equipment operating at peak performance.

The role splits time between our dedicated workshop and mobile field service callouts across Canterbury. Keeping our fleet moving while working alongside a legendary team, solving mechanical puzzles on big gear and wanting a workplace where you actually enjoy your days, where no two days are the same.

About the role:

Based in our workshop, in Winslow 10 minutes south of Ashburton.

Seasonal roster with 11 days on, 3 days off. Approx September to May.

Key Responsibilities:
* Preventative Maintenance: Routine servicing of modern machinery fleet ahead of peak contracting seasons.
* Field Breakdowns: Provide rapid on-site breakdown support to minimize operator downtime during harvest.
* Fabrication: Perform general agricultural welding, component modification, implement repairs, cut, shape, and assemble custom machinery attachments, implement frames, and heavy‐duty components from engineering drawings.
* Manual Machining: Set up and operate manual mills and lathes to turn, bore, thread, and face custom parts, pins, and bushings.
What we can offer:
* Perks: Modern workshop facilities, dedicated service vehicle, and ongoing professional development.
* Work Environment: Stable, long‐term employment within a highly supportive, practical workshop team.
* Great Crew Culture: We work hard during the seasonal rush, but we never forget to have a laugh and back each other up.
* Social & Team Events: End‐of‐season team celebrations and regular social get‐togethers.
* Collaborative Environment: No operating in isolated silos here; you will brainstorm fixes alongside a supportive team of mechanics and operators.
About You:
* Qualification: Trade‐certified Agricultural Engineer, or Automotive Machinist.
* Experience: Proven background working with MIG, TIG, stick welding. Hands‐on experience setting up and operating manual engineering lathes and milling machines.
* Schematic Reading: Ability to accurately interpret complex engineering blueprints, structural schematics.
* Industry Knowledge: Deep understanding of the operational stress and loads placed on large‐scale harvesting and contracting equipment.
* Availability: Ability to work flexible, extended hours and rostered weekend callouts during the peak seasonal rush.
* Mindset: Practical, analytical problem‐solver capable of working independently in both a design workshop and field environment.
* Team Fit: A positive, down‐to‐earth attitude with a sense of humour and a drive to contribute to a great workplace culture.
* Licensing: Full, clean New Zealand driver's licence.
