Position Overview
As a Psychiatric Enrolled Nurse Level 2 (PEN Level 2) within the Steele Haughton Unit, you will provide high-quality care to consumers aged 65+ experiencing acute mental health challenges. You will work collaboratively with the Multidisciplinary Team (MDT), delivering trauma-informed, recovery-oriented services, and may mentor staff and support consumers. The SHU is a 10-bed Aged Acute and 20-bed Residential inpatient unit serving older adults with complex mental health conditions.
Key Responsibilities
* Administer prescribed medications (NMBA approved) and provide medication information to consumers and carers.
* Conduct mental state examinations, psychosocial assessments, and consumer interviews.
* Develop and update consumer-centered care plans, identify clinical risks, and collaborate with the MDT.
* Ensure a safe and supportive environment for consumers and staff.
* Plan and facilitate group sessions with the Clinical Nurse Educator and provide mental health education to consumers, carers, and significant others.
* Participate in consumer reviews, discharge planning, and coordinate recovery-oriented care with the MDT.
* Support peer and carer programs, mentor PEN student learners.
* Provide tailored care for older adults in line with recovery principles.
Skills & Experience
* Diploma of Nursing (or equivalent).
* Registered with AHPRA as an Enrolled Nurse (mandatory).
* Post-registration qualification in mental health nursing.
* NMBA-approved qualification in medication administration or working towards it.
* Minimum of 2 years’ experience in mental health, especially with consumers experiencing acute conditions.
* Ability to apply recovery principles and communicate effectively with consumers and carers.
* Knowledge of the Victorian Mental Health and Wellbeing Act, 2022, and ability to work autonomously within legal and ethical frameworks.
* Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
* Proficiency in computer skills and online communication platforms (e.g., MS Teams, Zoom, telehealth).
* Current Victorian driver's license (if applicable).
