The Opportunity
The chief function of the Historical Publications Section (HIS) in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is the publication of the official documentary record of Australia's external relations, Documents on Australian Foreign Policy (DAFP). The project, which has been in operation for more than fifty years, comprises a now-completed first series covering the period 1937–49, a second series taking in the years after 1950 (continuing) and several volumes in a pre-1937 period (also continuing). The volumes are internationally respected and aim for the highest standards of scholarship, presentation and production.
The successful candidate will be capable of not only producing prescribed DAFP volumes but also providing Director HIS with editorial assistance where appropriate. They should also be capable of developing and contributing to other historical publications, including a history of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and its antecedent agencies; conducting extensive research in government repositories; assisting with digitisation of the series on the DFAT website; sharing responsibility for administrative tasks, including secretariat duties for the Editorial Advisory Board and financial procurement; representing DFAT at domestic and international historical conferences; and taking carriage of information requests and other historical tasking in a timely and efficient manner.
