Purpose of the Position
The Adolescent and Young Adult Hospice (AYAH) opened in February 2023. It provides subacute care to adolescents and young adults with life-limiting conditions. Specialist or General Practice Visiting Medical Officers will provide out of hours on-call medical support. The roster will be shared with Palliative Care Staff Specialists already appointed to AYAH.
On-call hours overnight Monday to Friday 16:30 to 08:00 plus all Saturday and Sunday with attendance as necessary for urgent after hours issues. The rostered on-call will be for a week and shared across 8 specialists.
The AYAH is on the grounds of the Old Manly Hospital. It is operated by Mona Vale Hospital and is a part of the Northern Sydney Local Health District (NSLHD).
The AYAH team caring for patients and families is multidisciplinary. This team includes medical staff, nursing staff, social work, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, psychology, dieticians, speech pathology, pharmacy and pastoral care.
The AYAH is a subacute service. Nursing staff are onsite 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The nursing staff are supported medically by a palliative care staff specialist (0.5FTE) and junior medical officers. Medical staff will be onsite on business days from 08:00 to 16:30. Weekend cover will generally be a junior medical officer (registrar or senior resident) visiting the AYAH on both Saturday and Sunday from 08:00 to 12 noon to respond to any nursing, patient, or family concerns that have been escalated.


This position is temporary with the possibility of extension based on performance, funding and need

Selection Criteria

* MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration as a Medical Practitioner with the Medical Board of Australia. Applicants must have Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP) or Fellowship of the Australian Chapter of Palliative Medicine (FRACP) or recognition as a specialist by the Medical Board of Australia. Applicants expecting to be awarded their Fellowship within 3 months may be considered.
* Consistently demonstrates behaviours that reinforce the CORE Values of our organisation; Collaboration, Openness, Respect and Empowerment. Demonstrates these behaviours with all stakeholders; colleagues, direct reports, as well as our patients and consumers, and those that care for them.
* Experience in Palliative Medicine and clinical experience in managing adolescent and young adult patients.
* Demonstrated ability to provide high quality compassionate medical care as evidenced by recent practice experience in working congenially and collaboratively as both a leader and member of a multidisciplinary team and as a provider of services that engender high levels of patient satisfaction and experience.
* Experience in quality and safety and clinical governance. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
* Ability to work independently within a supervised complex multidisciplinary clinical environment utilising judgment and expertise.
* Demonstrated high-level verbal and written communication, interpersonal, negotiation, teamwork and computer skills.
