Position Description

Urban Grounds Café, Toowoomba is seeking an experienced and motivated Sous Chef to join our kitchen leadership team on a permanent full-time basis.

In this role, you will work closely with the Head Chef to support daily kitchen operations, maintain high food quality standards, and provide strong leadership to kitchen staff. You will play a key role in ensuring efficient service, compliance with food safety regulations, and fostering a positive, professional team culture in a fast-paced hospitality environment.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

* Assist the Head Chef in ensuring the efficient production of food across all kitchen sections
* Supervise, lead, and support chefs, cooks, apprentices, and junior kitchen staff
* Allocate tasks to ensure smooth workflow and timely service
* Monitor meal production times and quality to maintain consistent standards
* Ensure compliance with food safety, hygiene, and workplace health and safety requirements
* Contribute ideas and collaborate on menu planning and development
* Maintain high standards of cleanliness, organisation, and safety in the kitchen
* Place and manage stock orders in line with operational requirements
* Oversee stock deliveries and ensure correct storage and stock control procedures
* Monitor kitchen equipment, report maintenance issues, and ensure suitability for service
* Oversee cleaning schedules and kitchen maintenance
* Promote professionalism, strong work ethic, and a positive team culture

Skills and Experience Required

* Proven experience working in a high-volume commercial kitchen
* Demonstrated leadership ability in supervising and guiding kitchen staff
* Strong knowledge of cooking techniques, ingredients, kitchen equipment, and food preparation methods
* Ability to follow and enforce recipes and operational standards
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
* Strong organisational and time-management skills
* Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
* Ability to work independently and as part of a leadership team
* Flexible availability, including evenings and weekends

Qualifications Required

* Certificate IV in Commercial Cookery (minimum requirement)

Minimum 3 years of relevant industry experience in a commercial kitchen environment

* Café

Restaurant-style operations

Shift Details

* 8-hour shifts
* Morning, day, afternoon, and evening shifts
* Weekend work required
