Your opportunity
We're looking for a highly motivated Technical Officer - Vessel Maintenance (Mechanical) who will be responsible for the maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of Port Authority's fleet of 30+ specialised vessels to ensure safe, efficient and reliable operation. This role involves diagnosing mechanical issues, performing preventative and emergency maintenance, and adhering to safety and compliance standards.
Reporting to the Lead Technical Officer, this position works closely with the Technical Officer – Vessel Maintenance (Electrical) and vessel maintenance contractors and suppliers to maximise asset efficiency, availability, and value in line with Port Authority objectives. This is a permanent full time role based in Sydney, This role will require you to be onsite for 5 days per week.
Here's how your impact will truly count:
* Inspect, service, and repair vessel engines (inboards, outboards) and mechanical systems including propulsion systems (conventional and waterjet), steering systems and auxiliary equipment. Perform routine maintenance including oil changes, filter replacements and lubrication.
* Provide hands-on technical support, conduct inspections, perform diagnostics, and resolve issues promptly to ensure asset reliability and compliance.
* Support the Lead Technical Officer by engaging with tradespeople and maintenance contractors, ensuring maintenance meets high-quality standards.
* Respond promptly to mechanical breakdowns and emergencies. Communicate with vessel operators and other internal stakeholders, and contractors.
* Manage spare parts inventory and ensure proper use and storage of tools. Recommend procurement of parts and equipment as needed.
* Verify invoices and report on work completion.
* Enforce WHS regulations, industry standards, and maritime safety requirements, including risk assessments, permits, and contractor safety documentation.
* Utilise the Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to track maintenance activities, maintain records, and support budget development for asset operations.
What you'll bring
* Mechanical Trade qualifications applied in an asset management environment for a minimum of 3 years, preferably in the maritime industry
* Demonstrated experience in marine engine and vessel maintenance .
* Strong knowledge of diesel and petrol engines.
* Strong problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder relationship management skills.
* Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritise work during peak periods.
* Proficiency in CMMS, Microsoft Office, and interpreting technical reports and engineering drawings.
* Familiarity with maritime safety regulations.
Essential Criteria
* Available to work outside regular hours of 7 am – 7pm (evenings, weekends and public holidays) when necessary to perform maintenance of an urgent/critical nature
* Current NSW Driver's Licence
* Required to obtain a Blue Card and First Aid Certificate
* Willingness to be based 5 days per week in the office
