Senior Drupal Software Engineer
Location Multiple locations available across NSW, VIC, QLD, ACT, WA, SA and NT; Capital city based roles with some regional options including Robina and Coffs Harbour
Contract type Initial 12 month engagement with potential extensions up to 24 months; 40 hours per week
Working arrangements Hybrid working model; Onsite attendance required for the first 6 weeks; Ongoing hybrid flexibility available after this period provided reasonable travel distance is maintained
Security requirements Baseline security clearance
About the role
We are seeking one or more Senior Drupal Software Engineers to join a large federal government digital team responsible for delivering and maintaining highly visible, high traffic websites.
This is a senior full stack role focused on Drupal and GovCMS platforms, covering the full development lifecycle from design and build through to testing, release and support. You will provide strong technical leadership, contribute to strategic direction, and support the quality and reliability of public facing digital services.
Out of hours support is required to participate in weekly release activities.
Key responsibilities
* Design, develop, test, deploy and continuously improve Drupal based solutions that meet business, user experience, accessibility and analytics needs
* Build and maintain automated tests to ensure website stability and performance
* Collaborate with product owners, designers, developers and business stakeholders to clarify requirements, manage constraints and estimate delivery timelines
* Deploy code and work closely with infrastructure and hosting teams to monitor and improve application performance
* Maintain Drupal core, contributed modules, custom modules and associated dependencies
* Provide ad hoc technical support and troubleshooting for Drupal administrators
* Contribute to development standards, policies and technical strategy
* Represent the development team in release meetings and technical forums
* Mentor junior developers and support knowledge transfer across teams
Skills and experience
Essential
* Extensive full stack web development experience using PHP version 8 with Drupal and Symfony
* Strong experience with Drupal 10 configuration, custom module development and theming
* Frontend development skills including TypeScript, VueJS, HTML, CSS and Sass
* Experience working with relational databases such as MySQL, MariaDB or AWS Aurora
* Strong understanding of secure, scalable and accessible website design
* Experience working in Agile and multi disciplinary teams
* Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non technical stakeholders
* Proven experience using Git, SQL and modern development workflows
Desirable
* Experience with GovCMS environments
* Experience writing and maintaining automated tests
* Regular production release experience and collaboration with infrastructure providers
* Website infrastructure experience including Nginx, SSL certificates and CDN or WAF configuration
* Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS
* CI CD experience using tools such as GitLab or GitHub
* Experience with Docker containerisation
* Strong knowledge of accessibility standards and user centred design principles
* Experience supporting Drupal site administrators
* Proven ability to mentor others and contribute to technical standards and governance
Qualifications
* Degree in Computer Science or a related discipline preferred
* Drupal or Acquia certifications highly regarded
