Your work will directly influence decisions at the highest levels, including Ministers, the Secretary, and the Executive Leadership Team.
The Director Government Law role is a prime opportunity for ambitious legal executives seeking to gain experience to step into a General Counsel position. You'll work closely with the General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel, gaining exposure to whole-of-department legal strategy, executive decision-making, and cross-sector collaboration. You will lead the provision of legal advice to the enabling functions with the Department and to the Office of Local Government, including on key Government regulatory and policy initiatives.

About You
You are a senior legal executive with a proven track record of delivering strategic legal leadership in complex, high-stakes environments. You bring deep expertise in government law, regulatory and administrative law, and statutory interpretation, coupled with the ability to navigate ambiguity and drive outcomes that balance legal integrity with operational pragmatism.
You lead with emotional intelligence, maturity, and a strong sense of public purpose. Your leadership style is collaborative and empowering—you build high-performing teams, foster trust across senior stakeholders, and influence decision-making at the executive and ministerial level.
You are ready for a role that offers both challenge and opportunity: to shape legal strategy across a major government department, to lead a team of expert lawyers, and to position yourself as a future General Counsel. You see the bigger picture, think beyond the legal brief, and are motivated by the opportunity to contribute to public value at scale.
