The Field Operations Lead, who reports to the Senior Geologist, handles the coordination and supervision of multiple greenfield exploration-stage field operations throughout Australia. Based in Perth, Australia, and partnering with the Exploration team, this role also leads field operations team members and other contractors on-site.
The role focuses on managing diverse exploration field programs safely and efficiently. It requires experienced planning and direct supervision at project sites. The job includes coordinating transportation and mobilisation of resources, tools, and equipment. It also involves ensuring safety, environmental, and governmental regulations are followed.
The candidate should demonstrate a basic understanding of the technical elements of Teck Exploration's business to ensure that field program planning and execution are optimised. Demonstrated skill in collaborating with and contributing to high-performing multidisciplinary teams is crucial, as well as fostering positive relationships within and outside of Teck.
Key Responsibilities
* Be a courageous safety leader, leading by example and fostering a proactive safety and sustainability culture. Ensure safe field operations and, at all times, hold the safety of employees, contractors, and consultants as our highest priority.
* Lead field operations technicians and other field-based contractors.
* Offer skilled leadership and coordination assistance to project teams during planning and field activities. This includes geophysical surveys, geochemical/geological sampling, and core drilling in remote camps and towns.
* Coordinate the timely freight and delivery of equipment along with supplies to remote field locations, ensuring all resources are available when required for program execution.
* Supervise warehouse, core facilities, and any site storage/laydown areas to maintain safe and efficient organisation, inventory control, and readiness for exploration activities.
* Oversee and handle the company's fleet of field vehicles, ensuring timely servicing and repair, and compliance with maintenance schedules. Coordinate vehicle allocation and positioning to support field programs efficiently.
* Proactively develop, document, and deliver risk/hazard assessments, emergency response plans, project inductions, and other HSEC work procedures and guidelines in conjunction with other team members.
* Collaborate with office and field-based employees to understand business objectives and to provide guidance for the efficient, appropriate, and cost-effective management of field programs.
* Maintain positive community relations on the projects. Taking a lead role in securing landholder access and supervising Native Title clearances and heritage monitoring programs.
* Carry out various drill program tasks safely and efficiently. Tasks include collecting petrophysical measurements on diamond drill core, processing drill core, and RAB/RC sampling. You will also supervise road works and ensure the drill site and surrounding area are rehabilitated to high industry standards.
* Manage, maintain, and on occasion procure field equipment such as in-house geophysical equipment, safety supplies, communication devices, drilling consumables, camp supplies, and other field gear primarily in Western Australia.
* Assist in the secure and effective running of various exploration projects. These include complex, multi-part camp-based field programs using fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters. Other programs involve multiple helicopter-portable or road-based diamond drilling. Simpler geoscience projects combine geological, geochemical, and geophysical surveys.
Qualifications
* 12-15 years of demonstrated experience working in remote field-based or mining settings. Familiarity with a broad spectrum of field-related activities and particular experience in field operations for mineral exploration drill programs in remote camps would be advantageous. Experience related to construction (e.g., exploration road or drill pad building) would be beneficial.
* Formal field technical qualifications (i.e., TAFE course) are an advantage, but not essential.
* Recognised leader with strong organisational, planning, analytical, and decision-making skills. Superior interpersonal, communicatio,n and leadership skills. Demonstrated ability to lead and empower a diverse team as well as effectively engage third parties.
* Proven track record of working effectively in a complex and dynamic environment. Able to work independently and with a diverse multidisciplinary team. Builds and strengthens relationships within the team and with contractors, consultants, service providers, regulators, Traditional Owners, and landholders.
* Experience in liaising with community collaborators on all aspects of exploration activities.
* Excellent communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills are required, as well as basic computer knowledge
* Able to work with minimal direction; driven to complete tasks with excellent organizational, planning, prioritization, problem-solving, and action skills.
* Ability to manage a range of logistics and operational activities; identify and resolve issues while arranging work priorities to meet project deadlines.
* Electrical and mechanical expertise and maintenance abilities for various types of equipment and vehicles commonly employed in mineral exploration would be beneficial.
* A valid First Aid certificate is essential, minimum requirement HLTAID009, HLTAID010, and HLTAID011. Class C manual driver's license, plus a heavy rigid license, a license to perform high-risk work (forklift license), and working at height.
