About the Role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Data Engineer to join our IT & Digital Services (ITDS) team on a 12-month contract. Reporting to the Architecture and Security Manager, this role is responsible for the design, implementation, and management of secure and scalable data solutions. We are modernizing our data infrastructure by replacing our current on-premises data warehouse with a new cloud-based solution. As a Data Engineer, you\'ll design, build, and implement this next-generation platform, work with business stakeholders to develop a new data model, apply complex business rules, and ensure accurate reflection in downstream reporting. You\'ll help define and deliver a suite of "Gold Standard" reports and design robust ETL/ELT processes to support trusted, scalable data pipelines. You\'ll also design, build and maintain the College\'s data infrastructure and architecture to ensure data quality, integrity and availability for analytics and operational objectives.

Responsibilities

* Design, build, and maintain scalable data pipelines and ETL/ELT processes for the new cloud data platform, collecting and storing data from multiple sources.
* Lead and execute the migration of data from on-premises sources (SQL Server and other source systems) to the cloud Snowflake platform with a Fabric front end.
* Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimise data pipelines to ensure data quality, reliability, and performance.
* Collaborate with technology and business stakeholders to understand needs and deliver high-quality data solutions.
* Implement and advocate for data modelling, governance, and security best practices.
* Document data pipelines, system architecture, and processes; generate reports on data quality, pipeline performance, and migration status.
* Develop visualization dashboards and ensure requirements are gathered, tested, and delivered to agreed standards and timeframes.
* Establish robust data quality assurance processes and resolve incidents within agreed timeframes.
* Develop data models with the Data Architect and contribute to master data management.
* Implement monitoring, logging, and alerting to maintain reliability and performance.

Qualifications

* Bachelor\'s degree in computer science, Data Engineering, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience).
* Proven experience as a Data Engineer with a focus on cloud data solutions.
* Hands-on experience with Snowflake or Microsoft Fabric is essential.
* Experience migrating data from on-premises databases to a cloud data warehouse.
* Proficiency in Power BI, SQL, and Python or another scripting language.
* Solid understanding of ETL/ELT principles and data integration tools.
* Familiarity with Azure, AWS, or GCP.
* Knowledge of data governance, data security, and compliance best practices.
* Strong understanding of cloud cost management (FinOps) to ensure scalable and cost-efficient solutions.

Nice-to-Haves

* Experience in the Higher Education sector.
* Experience with data orchestration tools.
* Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines for data engineering; certification in Snowflake, Microsoft Fabric, or a major cloud provider.
