Job Title: Principal Legal Officer, Commercial Law
Job Responsibilities
The Principal Legal Officer (PLO) in Commercial Law is responsible for providing expert legal advice and overseeing legal matters within the Commercial Law Section of the department.
The role involves working on a diverse range of legal issues, including property law, leasing, major procurements, intellectual property, probity, and funding and grant arrangements. The PLO is expected to supervise and provide second counsel to legal officers, handle complex and sensitive legal matters, and ensure the effective finalization of tasks. They are also responsible for leading a team, developing staff, setting goals, and driving performance through effective performance management.
The PLO collaborates with other PLOs, manages workflow, and contributes to team and branch meetings. Additionally, they work closely with senior executive service (SES) members to ensure appropriate briefing and escalation of issues, providing exceptional customer service and pragmatic problem‑solving.
Education and Experience
Essential qualifications for the role include a degree in law from an Australian university or a comparable overseas degree recognized in Australia for admission to practice. Candidates must have a Practising Certificate or be eligible to attain one, along with at least three years of post‑qualification experience. It is highly desirable for candidates to have specialised knowledge and experience in commercial law advisory work, preferably including government procurement and contracting, grants, and property.

The ideal candidate should possess high‑quality management and leadership skills, strong technical legal advice writing, second counselling, and research skills. Sophisticated relationship management, communication, and negotiation skills are also important to develop productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders and provide excellent client service. Salary and Position Details
Salary Information: The classification for the Principal Legal Officer ranges from $157 to $177,, plus % superannuation. The position is ongoing (permanent) and full‑time.
Additional Information: Candidates must be Australian Citizens and will be required to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting Level 1 security clearance. Additional clearances such as Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC) or Onboarding Check may be required based on the role's requirements.
