The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.

Your Impact
As a pivotal member of the Family Violence Prevention Unit, you will lead the delivery of culturally informed legal advice, representation, and community education. You’ll also work alongside the Principal Solicitor to manage staff, resources, and strategic initiatives that enhance legal services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families. Each day, you will:

- Lead and support the delivery of culturally appropriate legal advice, representation, early intervention, and community education in family law and care & protection matters.
- Manage, supervise, and develop staff, allocate workloads, and oversee recruitment, training, and professional development.
- Support the Principal Solicitor in implementing policies, strategies, and service improvements for First Nations clients.
- Coordinate and provide legal representation for First Nations clients across courts and tribunals, keeping up-to-date with legislation and case law.
- Participate in community education and engagement to strengthen relationships and raise the profile of the FVPU.
- Ensure ethical, compliant, and culturally safe practices across all operations and legal service delivery.

Your Story & Strengths
You are an experienced and passionate senior leader with a deep understanding of the cultural, social, and historical factors shaping the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You combine legal expertise with a strong commitment to community, justice, and culturally responsive practice. Key strengths include:

- Admitted or eligible to practice law in NSW or ACT with up to 6 years’ relevant legal experience.
- Proven experience managing a Family Violence Prevention Legal Service, including supervising staff, allocating workloads, and reviewing performance.
- Strong knowledge of care & protection and family law, with demonstrated ability to advocate effectively for First Nations clients.
- Excellent interpersonal, leadership, negotiation, and communication skills, with the ability to manage diverse teams and workloads.
- Commitment to culturally safe practices, workplace health & safety, and ethical, inclusive service delivery.
- Flexibility to travel and perform additional duties as required in support of the Principal Solicitor and the unit.
