The Observatory Technical Support Officer works closely with the Space Surveillance Operations Manager to provide high level quality technical support in maintaining and operating UNSW Canberra Space's two observatories (Canberra Falcon Telescope and VIPER telescope) with a strong focus on WHS compliance and requirements. The role involves a component of nighttime work.

Accountabilities

Specific accountabilities for this role include:

* Provide on-site technical support to the Space Surveillance Operations Manager for routine and non-routine maintenance activities, including night work.
* Provide technical support to the Space Surveillance Operations Manager for software, electrical and mechanical troubleshooting activities, including night work.
* Collect and process observational data of satellites and asteroids as needed using remote operations (night work).
* Provide support to the Space Surveillance Operations Manager to develop and maintain technical documentation, risk management forms and safe working procedures.

Skills and Experience

* A relevant qualification or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education, training and/or experience in engineering or laboratory work.
* Multidisciplinary problem-solving skills and ability to work independently/autonomously.
* Proficient computer literacy with excellent skills in Microsoft Office applications.
* Well-developed interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
* An understanding of and commitment to UNSW's aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
* Demonstrated capacity to write technical documentation, safe working procedures and manage risks compliant within UNSW guidelines.

The successful candidate will be inducted and trained to maintain and operate the telescopes, and an introduction to each subsystem will be provided. While no prior domain-specific knowledge is required for the role, a demonstrated experience or knowledge of optical instrumentation, electronics, and observatory control/data processing software is highly regarded.
