Profectus is seeking a Database Engineer to deliver database administration and engineering services within an Australian Government Agency in Canberra. This role provides technical expertise across enterprise database platforms including Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle, supporting both on-premise infrastructure and cloud-hosted database options. The successful candidate will manage their own workload, guide junior team members, and take ownership of project responsibilities including version upgrades, migrations and ongoing platform maintenance.
Key Responsibilities
Database Administration and Engineering
* Manage the administration, operation and performance of enterprise database platforms including SQL Server 2019–2022 and Oracle 19c+.
* Deploy, configure, support and maintain database infrastructure across on-premise and cloud-hosted environments.
* Implement and manage Always On Availability Groups (SQL Server) and/or Oracle Always-On high availability solutions.
* Perform performance tuning, troubleshooting and root cause analysis to maintain optimal database health.
* Manage the regular maintenance of patches, version upgrades and support packages across all database layers.
* Manage the operation of backup, high availability and disaster recovery solutions for database systems.
* Execute data archiving strategies and forecast infrastructure growth requirements.
Technical Leadership and Collaboration
* Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and less experienced colleagues.
* Liaise between technical services teams including application developers, SharePoint, and associated infrastructure teams (backup/storage, Windows, Linux/Unix server, network and virtualised desktop).
* Collaborate with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders to achieve project outcomes.
* Communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, taking ownership and initiative on assigned projects.
* Proactively share knowledge and expertise as a subject matter expert to reduce single-person dependencies.
Service Management and Operations
* Support technical change management processes and contribute to ICT strategy.
* Prepare and review technical documentation, reports and operational procedures.
* Monitor and manage work output and quality against established performance standards.
* Resolve and escalation issues that adversely impact performance or service delivery, including disaster and emergency situations.
* Encourage innovation, continuous improvement and support organisational change.
Skills and Experience
* 1.5+ years of solid experience in Database Administration (DBA) for SQL Server 2019–2022 and/or Oracle 19c+.
* Experience with Always On Availability Groups and/or Oracle Always-On monitoring.
* Extensive experience in troubleshooting, performance tuning and problem solving across complex ICT environments.
* Strong ability to communicate effectively with technical teams and operational leadership.
* Recent hands‐on administration across several relevant platforms, for example legal case management, business intelligence and analytics, workflow automation, GIS, managed file transfer or SFTP solutions.
* Practical automation and observability experience, including PowerShell scripting that reduces manual effort, along with alerts and log analysis that improve availability and shorten time to restore.
* Experience improving security posture and managing product licensing, combined with active knowledge sharing practices.
