The Senior Counsel Assisting leads a small team of Counsel Assisting, provides legal advice and guidance, and manages complex coronial investigation files. You will appear at inquests including sensitive and high-profile matters either as Counsel Assisting the Coroner or instructing external counsel.
Your work will support the Mining and Resources Coroner who undertakes mining and resources related death investigations and inquests as well as other coronial duties.
* Manage a small team of counsel assisting and/or junior legal officers and contribute to the leadership and development of legal officers in the Legal Services Team in CCQ.
* Review highly complex coronial files and make recommendations to coroners about whether an inquest should be held.
* Prepare highly complex and sensitive matters for inquest for coroners, including preparing court and other documents, briefing medical and technical specialists and other experts, and liaising with police, family members and other non-professional witnesses and stakeholders.
* Appear at inquest either as counsel assisting or instructing external counsel assisting the coroner, when directed.
* Summarise evidence at inquest and prepare submissions regarding coronial findings and recommendations.
* Cultivate productive working relationships with coroners and other CCQ staff, modelling professional behaviour and standards.
* Provide high level legal advice and specialist legal guidance and analysis, and perform other duties as directed.
* Coordinate CCQ registry staff involved in managing and preparing matters for inquest as required and in consultation with the Director, Legal Services Team.
* Provide support and advice to junior staff in the coronial team including registry staff.
* Contribute to a strong culture of wellbeing, performance excellence and professional development for the Legal Services Team and CCQ broadly.
