Our client is a federal government body seeking an experienced Senior Systems Engineer – Automation to support a major transformation program. This role will focus on the design, support, and enhancement of SCADA and control systems within a complex, safety‐critical environment.
You will work closely with engineering teams, field staff, and stakeholders to ensure the reliability, performance, and ongoing improvement of operational technology systems.
This is a 2-year fixed‐term contract offering a competitive salary and annual bonus. The role is based in Melbourne with hybrid working available. Candidates must be Australian citizens and able to obtain baseline security clearance.
Key Responsibilities
* Design, support and enhance SCADA, PLC, RTU and telemetry systems
* Investigate, manage and implement system upgrades, enhancements and fixes
* Ensure system performance, reliability and availability requirements are met
* Develop and execute testing and deployment plans for system changes
* Support field teams in resolving technical issues and deploying updates
* Produce and maintain engineering documentation, standards and procedures
* Lead technical activities across projects and operational support work
* Provide mentoring, coaching and technical oversight to engineers and specialists
* Support system security controls and compliance with safety standards
* Contribute to continuous improvement and modernisation of systems
Requirements
* Degree in Electrical, Mechatronics, Instrumentation or related engineering discipline
* Must be an Australian Citizen and eligible for Government Security Clearance
* Proven experience in automation, control systems or instrumentation engineering
* Strong hands‐on experience with SCADA, PLCs, RTUs and telemetry systems
* Experience with industrial protocols such as Modbus, BACnet and SNMP
* Ability to read and interpret electrical designs and control system architecture
* Experience troubleshooting complex systems in operational environments
* Programming capability in Python, C++, or PLC languages (e.g. Ladder Logic)
* Strong analytical and problem‐solving skills
* Ability to work across multiple teams and manage technical stakeholders
* Excellent documentation and communication skills
