The Vice President of Design & Product Development in the Apparel industry is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing the creative and technical aspects of product design, development, and innovation within the company. The VP will lead a dynamic design and product development team, ensuring that the apparel collections align with market trends, customer demands, and the company’s brand vision. With a strong focus on creativity, quality, and efficiency, this role will drive the strategic direction of the product line while managing timelines, cost, and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Strategic Leadership in Design:
o Develop and implement the creative vision and design strategy for all apparel collections, ensuring alignment with the brand’s identity, target market, and business objectives.
o Lead and mentor the design and product development teams, fostering a collaborative, creative, and innovative culture.
o Monitor emerging trends in fashion, materials, and technologies, ensuring that the design process reflects cutting‑edge developments in the industry.
2. Product Development Oversight:
o Oversee the end‑to‑end product development process, from concept and sketching to final garment production.
o Manage the creation and development of new product lines, ensuring they meet market demand, quality standards, and profitability goals.
o Work closely with the sourcing and production teams to ensure timely, cost‑effective production and delivery.
3. Collaboration with Cross‑Functional Teams:
o Collaborate with marketing, sales, and merchandising teams to ensure the product designs align with market expectations and brand positioning.
o Work with the supply chain and production teams to ensure seamless transition from design to production, optimizing manufacturing processes.
o Partner with the retail and e‑commerce teams to incorporate customer feedback into product development.
4. Design Innovation and Trend Forecasting:
o Lead trend forecasting efforts and incorporate relevant, innovative design ideas into new collections.
o Stay ahead of market trends, consumer behavior, and competitor designs to ensure the brand remains competitive and fresh in the marketplace.
o Explore new materials, technologies, and sustainable practices to enhance the product offering.
5. Brand and Product Identity:
o Ensure all products and designs reflect the brand's ethos, vision, and aesthetic, maintaining consistency across all collections and categories.
o Work with the marketing and branding teams to ensure product designs align with the company’s overall brand strategy and message.
o Maintain high standards of quality, aesthetics, and craftsmanship, ensuring that all products uphold the company’s reputation.
6. Budget and Cost Management:
o Develop and manage the product development budget, ensuring that design, prototyping, and production are completed within the allocated costs.
o Collaborate with the finance team to establish financial targets, ensuring profitability and cost efficiency without compromising product quality.
o Optimize the product development process to meet deadlines while managing costs, inventory, and resources effectively.
7. Vendor and Supplier Management:
o Establish and maintain relationships with key vendors, suppliers, and manufacturers to ensure high‑quality production and material sourcing.
o Negotiate with suppliers to ensure the best quality, prices, and timelines for raw materials and garment production.
o Ensure that suppliers adhere to ethical sourcing practices, quality standards, and sustainability initiatives.
8. Sustainability and Ethical Design:
o Champion sustainability and ethical practices within the design and product development processes, advocating for eco‑friendly materials, processes, and packaging.
o Lead initiatives to reduce the environmental footprint of products, ensuring compliance with global sustainability standards and trends.
o Implement strategies to minimize waste, optimize material usage, and explore new sustainable technologies.
9. Performance Monitoring and Reporting:
o Track and evaluate the success of new product lines, using data and sales feedback to refine future designs.
o Provide regular updates to the executive team on the status of design projects, product launches, and collection performance.
o Monitor and report on the product development cycle, ensuring products are delivered on time and within budget.
Skills and Qualifications:
* Education: A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Fashion Design, Product Development, or a related field. Additional certifications in fashion management or business administration would be a plus.
* Experience: At least 15+ years of experience in the fashion industry, with a strong background in apparel design, product development, and leadership. A minimum of 5-7 years in a senior or executive-level role, ideally as a VP, Director, or Head of Product Development.
* Industry Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of fashion trends, apparel manufacturing processes, fabric sourcing, garment construction, and sustainable fashion practices.
* Leadership Skills: Proven experience leading and managing a creative team, with the ability to inspire and develop talent.
* Creativity & Vision: Strong creative direction and a keen sense of design, with a deep understanding of what resonates with consumers across various demographics.
* Project Management: Experience in managing large‑scale design projects, overseeing budgets, timelines, and cross‑functional collaboration.
* Business Acumen: Strong understanding of the business side of fashion, including cost management, budgeting, and profitability.
* Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively present to stakeholders and collaborate with various teams.
* Technology Proficiency: Familiarity with design software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, CAD), product development tools, and data analytics platforms.
Working Conditions:
* Location: Primarily based in the company’s headquarters or design studio. Occasional travel to manufacturing sites, showrooms, and industry events may be required.

* Product line profitability and sales performance.
