Overview
Deliver culturally safe, competent primary healthcare to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients in Victoria's correctional settings. Aboriginal Health Practitioners are key members of the GEO Healthcare Team, providing primary healthcare services across multiple correctional locations.
Positions are available at multiple correctional centre locations across Victoria, with both full-time and part-time opportunities. There is flexibility to work across multiple sites and locations, with relocation assistance, free parking, and professional development perks.
Location and Scheduling
- Lara Precinct and associated sites: Barwon Prison, Lara; Marngoneet Correctional Centre, Lara; Western Plains Correctional Centre, Lara
- Other locations: Beechworth Correctional Centre; Hopkins Correctional Centre; Langi Kal Kal Prison; Loddon & Middleton Prisons; Ravenhall Correctional Centre; Melbourne Assessment Prison / Metropolitan Remand Centre
- Trainee Position: Melbourne Assessment Prison / Metropolitan Remand Centre
- Flexible days per week across sites to form a Full Time Equivalent role (as available)
About the role
Aboriginal Health Workers/Practitioners provide culturally safe, competent primary healthcare within a multidisciplinary team. You will report to the Manager, Aboriginal Health for cultural support and supervision, and to the relevant Area Manager for operational matters, ensuring care is delivered with respect, dignity, and clinical excellence. You will collaborate with other health professionals to advocate for the cultural and health needs of Aboriginal patients within a correctional environment.
Responsibilities
- Deliver primary healthcare services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients in correctional settings
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to plan, coordinate, and evaluate care
- Provide culturally safe assessments, treatment planning, and follow-up
- Refer and communicate effectively with other health professionals
Qualifications and Requirements
- Health qualification or current study pathway (Certificate III or IV Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care or equivalent). Salary scales vary by qualification level.
- Current registration with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency as an Aboriginal Health Practitioner (or eligible)
- Ability to provide culturally competent and safe health care to Aboriginal people
- Ability to perform primary health assessments, planning, treatment, and evaluation
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team and across GEO Healthcare locations
- Identifies as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
- Valid full Australian driver's licence
- Satisfactory completion of National Criminal History Check
- Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance
Salary notes: for eligible qualifications, salary ranges may apply (examples include up to $102,000 + Super for registered practitioners). Salary is based on qualifications and experience.

- Three COVID-19 vaccinations and flu vaccination in the previous 12 months (proof required)
