Mainframe Developer
Our client, a major Federal Government agency, is seeking a highly motivated Associate Developer to join their team. This is a Canberra‐based, onsite role supporting one of Australia's most critical national systems.
Role Details
Contract Length: 12 months
Extensions: Up to 2 × 12‐month extensions
Location: Canberra, ACT (onsite, 5 days per week)
Hours: Up to 40 hours per week
Clearance: NV1
About the Role
You will work within a collaborative team supporting and enhancing a large‐scale mainframe‐based Passport Issuance and Control System. This work includes development, maintenance, troubleshooting, forward planning and integration across a diverse technology environment.
Key Responsibilities
* Develop and maintain COBOL applications and supporting mainframe components
* Produce technical specifications and contribute to solution design
* Integrate software modules into functional, stable systems
* Perform unit and component testing
* Support deployment processes and adhere to strict change/release protocols
* Troubleshoot and resolve issues across mainframe applications
* Provide technical advice and collaborate with BAs, PMs and other developers
* Participate in incident response, including after‐hours support on a rotating roster
* Liaise with internal stakeholders and external service providers
Essential Skills
* Strong experience with COBOL, CICS, JCL, VSAM, DB2 and mainframe debugging tools
* Excellent communication and documentation skills
* Solid understanding of z/OS or z/VSE
* Strong analytical and problem‐solving skills
Desirable
* Experience with PL/I, MQ Series, or Rocket Data z/Services
