The City of Launceston is seeking a motivated Food Safety Officer to join our Health and Compliance team. This role supports the protection of public health by regulating, educating, and enforcing food safety requirements under the Food Act 2003 and the Australian New Zealand Food Standards Code.
Working as part of the Environmental Health team, the Food Safety Officer conducts inspections, investigations and compliance activities, provides technical advice to businesses and the community, and contributes to food safety surveillance, sampling and recall responses. The role also supports continuous improvement, knowledge sharing, and collaborative responses to emerging public health risks.
Key responsibilities
* Conducting inspections, investigations and compliance activities under the Food Act
* Assessing applications, preparing notices, reports and enforcement documentation
* Undertaking food sampling, surveillance activities and supporting food recall responses
* Providing accurate technical advice and education to internal and external stakeholders
* Preparing briefs of evidence and appearing in court when required
* Working closely with Environmental Health Officers, other Council teams and external agencies on investigations and public health matters
* Supporting community education, campaigns and stakeholder engagement
* Working autonomously in the field while maintaining high professional standards and WHS compliance
About You
* Ability to interpret and apply food legislation, standards and industry guidance
* Strong investigative, analytical and risk assessment capability
* Excellent written and verbal communication, conflict resolution and negotiation skills
* Ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively
* High‐level customer service and problem‐solving skills
* Ability to manage competing priorities and work effectively in the field
Qualifications
* A relevant science degree (e.g., microbiology, food safety, food science, food technology), or
* A science‐related degree plus recognised postgraduate or vocational qualifications in food safety or related areas (e.g., NFSA Level 4)
* Demonstrated experience in food safety management, compliance or enforcement
* Commitment to ongoing professional development required to maintain Food Act authorisation
About the Team
The Food Safety Officer works within the Health and Regulations team, a dedicated area responsible for protecting public health, ensuring regulatory compliance, and supporting safe practices across the community. Within this team, the Food Safety Officer provides expert advice, conducting inspections and investigations, and delivering essential regulatory services. Although the role operates autonomously in the field, it is strongly connected to the broader Environmental Health and Compliance functions, collaborating with colleagues and external agencies on investigations, public health matters and surveillance programs. You'll be joining a supportive, knowledgeable and highly professional area that values evidence‐based practice, and effective community engagement.
