The Department

The Bayside Health, Alfred care group's Department of Infectious Diseases is one of the largest and most comprehensive infectious diseases clinical services in Australia. The Department provides clinical care for people in hospital and in the community with a range of infections and infectious diseases.

The Role

The Social Worker is responsible for the provision of Social Work services to patients admitted to The Alfred Infectious Diseases unit. The position has a particular focus on people who inject drugs (PWID) admitted to ward for antibiotic therapy who require support to remain in hospital to complete treatment or support to continue treatment in an outpatient setting. The position involves working within a multidisciplinary team to support patients with complex psychosocial issues to engage in health care to improve health outcomes. The position sits within the Social Work Infectious Disease Team, and the Social Worker will be expected to provide Social Work cover to the broader team (HIV, Infectious Diseases and Haemophilia) dependent on clinical need and at the discretion of the Team Leader.

Qualifications and Experience Required

* Advanced social work skills and experience as evidenced by preferably 3+years post qualifying experience and a demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development.
* Demonstrated understanding of the complex psychosocial issues impacting individuals with a Blood Bourne Virus (BBV) and PWID and the subsequent barriers to engagement in health care. An understanding of the impact of stigma in both people with BBV and PWID and the intersectionality of these factors.
* Knowledge of hospital admission and discharge planning process and experience working within a multi-disciplinary team.
* The successful applicant will also need to have experience in undertaking complex discharge planning and case work and counselling, with a particular emphasis on stigma and adjustment to illness.
* Demonstrated experience in social work student supervision and an interest and commitment in the professional supervision of staff.
* This position involves a component of community outreach and the successful applicant is required to have a current Victorian Drivers Licence.
