Job No: WASC611
Location: Coonabarabran
Department: Roads
Reports to: Supervisor Roads Maintenance
Salary Range: $59,109 - $68,694 per annum + superannuation
Do you enjoy hands-on work that makes a real difference in your community? Do you have what it takes to help keep our roads safe?
We’re looking for a motivated and safety-focused Signs Operator to join our team. In this role, you’ll help install, maintain, and replace traffic signage and roadside furniture across the Shire—playing a vital part in keeping our roads safe, compliant, and easy to navigate for residents and visitors alike. From guideposts and guardrails to street and regulatory signage, your work will directly support Council’s road operations program and community safety outcomes.
As a Signs Operator, you’ll work as part of a dedicated sign crew, carrying out inspections, identifying damaged or unsafe assets, and completing installations and repairs in line with Australian Signage Standards and Council procedures. You’ll confidently operate tools, vehicles, and small plant such as post drivers and augers, assist with traffic control on active roadways, and complete daily records including job sheets, timesheets, and safety checklists. At times you will support other areas of the roads maintenance team such as patching and roadside slashing.
This is a varied, outdoor role that suits someone who enjoys physical work, teamwork, and getting the job done right. No two days are the same, and your work will directly support Council’s road safety and maintenance programs.
We’re looking for someone who is safety-minded, reliable, and able to follow instructions while also working independently when required. You’ll need a current NSW Class MR Driver Licence, a practical approach to labouring tasks, and an understanding of safe work practices. Traffic Control qualifications (Blue and Yellow Cards) are required - if you don't already have them, you must be willing to obtain them. Previous experience in local government or civil maintenance, along with basic computer or mobile device skills, will be highly regarded.
Most importantly, you’ll take pride in your work and understand the role quality signage plays in protecting the community. You’ll be adaptable to changing weather conditions and urgent requests, maintain a positive and professional attitude, and represent Council respectfully when interacting with the public. If you’re a team player with attention to detail and a commitment to safety, we’d love to hear from you.
