Position Summary
The Principal Consultant (PC) supports the growth, refinement and delivery of Franklin Energy's Strategic Consulting practice, a high‐impact advisory engine that helps utilities and public agencies navigate load growth, affordability, grid modernization, policy and regulatory change, and decarbonization. The PC sells and leads complex advisory work for utilities and public agencies, building relationships with select accounts. The PC runs engagements end-to‐end, turns strategy into plans and analyses, leads client cadence and team execution, and ensures quality, impact and customer satisfaction.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Engagement Ownership and Project Management
* Own client engagements end to end (scope, schedule, staffing, budget, risks, project health); run status meetings, and steer timely decisions.
* Translate client goals into structured workstreams.
* Manage project budgets (rate/mix, burn vs. value delivered), change‐order triggers, and utilization targets.
* Lead internal quality gates (scoping review → mid engagement review → close out) to ensure accuracy, defensibility, and executive ready clarity of all deliverables.
* Ensure stakeholder alignment (client executives, program leaders, cross functional SMEs) via concise briefings, decision logs, and action trackers.
Relationship Development, and Business Development
* Build, deepen, and manage trusted advisor relationships with utility and public‐sector clients; proactively understand their challenges, priorities, and emerging needs.
* Identify, shape, and champion next phase opportunities within active accounts; coordinate with Senior Leaders and Sales/Business Development to progress and convert opportunities.
* Contribute to scoping and pricing (levels of effort, phasing, milestones, value drivers) and support the development of win themes, proposal narratives, and executive messaging.
* Represent the Strategic Consulting practice in client forums, workshops, and conferences to strengthen Franklin Energy's market presence and position the firm for future work.
Consulting Services Delivery
* Lead and personally deliver core consulting work products, including qualitative and quantitative analyses, financial/benefit modeling, regulatory/policy synthesis, and program/portfolio design.
* Produce high quality deliverables — reports, presentations, implementation plans, decision frameworks — that are accurate, actionable, and executive ready.
* Facilitate client workshops, interviews, and working sessions to gather insights, validate findings, align stakeholders, and shape recommendations.
* Apply structured problem‐solving techniques to break down ambiguous challenges and develop defensible, insight‐rich solutions.
* Coach and elevate project teams, providing clear direction, feedback, and oversight to ensure consistent delivery excellence.
* Maintain accountability for the quality, timeliness, and rigor of all client‐facing outputs, whether delivered individually or through team members.
Inter‐Enterprise Collaboration
* Convert strategy into execution by partnering with Program Delivery (Residential/C&I), Product Solutions, and Design/Build to define handoffs, staffing, and sequencing that maximize downstream value.
* Protect independence and preclusion guardrails (e.g., evaluation vs. implementation) while still optimizing enterprise outcomes.
Thought Leadership
* Develop client‐ready points of view, briefs, and conference materials on affordability, load growth, resilience/VPPs, DSM/DER portfolio strategy, and BPS/compliance trends.
* Monitor market and regulatory signals (commission proceedings, policy shifts, funding windows) and translate them into timely client guidance and internal playbooks.
Team & Culture
* Model Franklin Energy's values — including innovation, diversity, inclusion, integrity, and safety — both internally, among colleagues, and externally, with clients, customers, and stakeholders.
