Production Quality Group Leader - Garage
Hanwha Defence Australia (HDA) are delivering capability to the Australian Defence Force by uniting the best Australian and South Korean technology and practices.
HDA has established a $170 million manufacturing facility known as the Hanwha Armoured Vehicle Centre of Excellence (H-ACE), next to Avalon Airport in Geelong, which will bring high technology vehicle manufacturing back to the region.
Under Stage 1, the 32,000 square metre state-of-the-art facility will initially be focused on the production of Hanwha’s AS9 Self-Propelled Howitzer (SPH) and AS10 Armoured Ammunition Resupply Vehicle (AARV) under LAND 8116 Phase 1 Protected Mobile Fires program. Stage 2 design has commenced and will see the facility expanded to fulfill the Australian Army requirement for 129 Redback Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs), under LAND 400 Phase 3. The plant features a 1,500-metre test track, deep-water test facility, obstacle course and purpose built Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMI / EMC) chamber, one of the most advanced in the region.
Your recent role:
The Production Quality Group Leader - Garage is responsible for managing a team of driver – mechanics who perform inspections, testing, repairs and verifications of military vehicles. This role ensures that all vehicles meet safety, performance, and quality standards through functional testing, fault diagnosis, and repair or replacement of defective components. The position will coordinate daily operations, provide technical guidance, and drive continuous improvement in inspection and repair processes.
Your primary areas of responsibilities:
- Lead and supervise a team performing vehicle inspection, driving, repairs and testing
- Coordinate and schedule daily activities to align with production outputs and delivery timelines
- Oversee the testing of vehicles including inspection and performance testing
- Review inspection reports and ensure corrective actions are completed
- Work with the team to diagnose, repair or oversee the replacement of defective components
- Ensure all repair work is completed accurately and captured on the build state certificate
- Efficient record keeping for production documentation and resource training that ensures compliance with ISO and other legislative requirements
- Maintain compliance with company policies, safety standards and housekeeping practices
- Keep the Production Quality Manager informed of progress, delays and issues
- Liaise with production, engineering and quality teams to resolve repeat issues and drive continuous improvements
- Work with the Production Quality Manager to develop training plans and documentation for the team that allows cross training of tasks
- Conduct regular skills assessment of all team members via competency skills assessment and identifying and rectifying skill gaps
- Oversee routine work standards, tooling & equipment requirements
- Attend and lead regular meetings as required that facilitates both information flow and escalation
- Other duties as directed by the Production Quality Manager, commensurate with knowledge and training.
About you:
As an ideal candidate you will have:
- Trade Qualified Mechanic (Light/Heavy)
- Leadership Development Training/Course (highly regarded)
- Minimum 10 years' experience as a mechanic, preferably with heavy vehicles
- Automotive Industry experience
- Demonstrated experience in a leadership role and ability to lead and coach a team
- Demonstrated experience in fault diagnosis, repair, and replacement of mechanical, hydraulic and electrical components
- Previous exposure to vehicle inspection and testing, and quality control processes
- Experience with modern quality assurance systems
- Able to interpret electrical schematic drawings and data-packs correctly
- Strong attention to detail and competent Microsoft Office skills
- Experience in using ERP/MRP systems
