North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation (NQBP) is seeking a Financial Accountant to provide high-quality financial services and support across the organisation. Reporting to the Senior Manager Finance & Business Improvement, this role plays a key part in ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of NQBP's financial reporting in line with Australian Accounting Standards, audit requirements, and Government Owned Corporation obligations.
The position supports the delivery of NQBP's finance function through the preparation of statutory accounts, month-end and year-end processes, general ledger maintenance, fixed asset accounting, taxation compliance, and application of financial policies and internal controls.
Key Responsibilities
* Contribute to successful and timely month-end and year-end close processes, including preparation of journals, reconciliations, and data integrity checks.
* Maintain the fixed asset register, including acquisitions, disposals, depreciation, revaluations, stocktake, and timely capitalisation of projects.
* Prepare annual financial statements in accordance with Australian Accounting Standards and all relevant legislative requirements.
* Support internal and external audit activities through preparation of workpapers, reconciliations, and responses to audit queries.
* Manage taxation requirements including income tax, FBT, and BAS preparation.
* Liaise with external government bodies and provide required financial information as needed.
* Provide financial advice and support to internal stakeholders, delivering high-quality customer service and promoting financial awareness across the organisation.
* Assist with Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable processing when required.
* Backfill and prepare fortnightly payroll during Payroll Officer leave periods.
* Review, update, and maintain financial accounting procedures to ensure accuracy and relevance.
* Apply corporate finance policies and assist in developing and reviewing financial policies and standards to ensure compliance with legislation and operational needs.
* Undertake projects relevant to the role, including planning, prioritising, and organising work.
* Identify, implement, and champion process and system improvements to streamline finance processes.
* Provide technical guidance and support to finance team members.
Qualifications
* Tertiary qualifications in accounting (or a related discipline) with substantial experience in a similar role.
* Membership with CPA Australia or Chartered Accountants ANZ (CA).
* Proficiency in asset accounting and project capitalisation.
* Experience in accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll processing.
* Extensive knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards and relevant corporate and taxation legislation.
* High-level analytical, organisational, and prioritisation skills with the ability to meet competing deadlines.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a proven ability to deliver excellent customer service.
* Proficiency with Microsoft Office and strong keyboard skills.
* Demonstrated ability to work with initiative, minimal supervision, and sound judgement.
* Experience using TechnologyOne.
* Previous experience within a Government Owned Corporation.
