NORTHERN TERRITORY GOVERNMENT

Office of the Chief Minister

Location: Level 5, Parliament House, Darwin, Northern Territory

Provide operational and advisory support to the Government Whip to ensure the effective coordination of parliamentary business, MLA engagement and parliamentary communications.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Act as a key liaison between the Whip, Members of the Legislative Assembly, ministerial offices and electorate offices to support effective coordination and operations of parliament.

2. Support the Whip in managing parliamentary business, including attendance, pairing arrangements, and day-to-day parliamentary logistics.

3. Manage and oversee MLA-related correspondence and enquiries, ensuring matters are triaged, tracked, responded to and escalated appropriately.

4. Coordinate parliamentary and MLA communications, including briefings, notices and formal correspondence.

5. Prepare briefings, correspondence, speeches and reports as required.

6. Work closely with the Legislative Adviser and policy team to ensure parliamentary activity and communication workflows are aligned.

7. Provide support on policy, procedural and strategic matters as required, and undertake other duties consistent with the scope and seniority of the role as directed by the Whip or Chief of Staff.

Selection Criteria

Essential:

1. Demonstrated high level interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with the ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality.

2. Demonstrated sound judgement and awareness, with sensitivity to community, stakeholder and parliamentary issues.

3. Strong organisational, planning and time management skills, with the ability to manage high volumes of correspondence and competing priorities.

4. Sound knowledge and understanding of government and political processes and procedures.

Desirable:

1. Knowledge of parliamentary processes, procedures and conventions, including a sound understanding of the Westminster system of government.
