Primary objective
Manage the Agency’s response to requests for information that relate to applications to the Territories Stolen Generation
Redress Scheme in consultation with program areas, expert advisors and the Team Leader, Information Release. Support the
Agency to meet its responsibilities in promoting best practice and provide advice and training in accordance with the
applicable components of the associated legislation.
Context statement
The Legal Services Unit sits within the Strategic Policy and Commissioning division and ensures Department of Children and
Families (DCF) is effectively and efficiently fulfilling its obligations under relevant legislation, while improving Chief Executive
oversight and access to legal support, in consultation with the Solicitor for the Northern Territory and other legal service
providers.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Coordinate, process and respond to requests received relating to the Territories Stolen Generations Redress Scheme,
including reporting and statistics and administrative tasks, such as retrieval and return of records, description and
copying.
2. Undertake independent analysis of the content of Departmental-held information and redact as necessary in accordance
with the relevant legislation, guidelines, policy and legal advice.
3. Develop and maintain sound working relationships with management and departmental staff to facilitate effective and
timely management of responses to requests for information in accordance with legislative obligations.
4. Contribute to the development and maintenance of Agency guidelines and procedures to ensure best practice in
handling personal information and compliance with the Information Act 2002.
5. Develop and manage effective monitoring and reporting mechanisms to inform reporting requirements.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. A detailed working knowledge of the issues, principles and practices in the areas of court processes, freedom of
information and information privacy.
2. Demonstrated effectiveness in a highly sensitive, confidential, and complex environment with a high level of integrity,
discretion and confidentiality.
3. High level of interpersonal, oral and written communication and reporting skills with strong ability to gain the
cooperation of internal and external clients.
4. Well-developed organisational skills with high levels of self-motivation and an ability to think and act strategically.
5. Demonstrated organisational and time management skills with the capacity to prioritise competing requirements, work
under pressure and meet critical deadlines while maintaining quality control.
6. Demonstrated ability to adapt positively to change, manage conflict and contribute to a positive team environment.
Desirable
1. Demonstrated experience undertaking release of information in a complex legislative environment, including the ability
to use redaction software.
2. Well-developed practical understanding of records management and computerised information systems.
