This role requires strong technical expertise in PLC programming, SCADA systems, MES applications, and industrial networking to ensure reliable operation of critical production systems.
The engineer will work closely with operational teams, vendors, and the broader technology team to deliver effective solutions that minimize downtime and maximize operational efficiency.Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:Technical EngineeringMaintain, configure, program, and commission PLC systems, SCADA applications, and process control networks for processing plant operationsDevelop, implement, maintain control system logic, HMI screens, and alarm management strategiesSupport MES (Manufacturing Execution Systems) applications for production tracking and optimizationComplete Audits and verifications to ensure control systems meets ongoing business requirementsPerform detailed troubleshooting and root cause analysis of control system faults and performance issuesMaintain system documentation including P&IDs, control narratives, network diagrams, as-built drawings and other documentationPerform Process Control Management Processes on all Process related systemsSupport continuous improvement initiatives through automation enhancements and process optimizationEnsure control system designs comply with relevant standards, safety requirements, and best practicesEngage with key stakeholders to understand and review technical requirements of system improvements and changesProcess Control System SupportProvide technical support for operational technology infrastructure including:PLC, Drives, and other APC and DCS systemsNetwork & Communication assets within process control realmInstrumentation, IEDs.MES systems and applicationsSCADA and other plant automation and control systemsRespond to service interruption requests as defined by priority and SLA requirementsExecute planned maintenance activities on control system hardware and softwarePerform software updates, patches, and version upgrades in accordance with change management proceduresCollaborate with Perth-based infrastructure teams to resolve network, server, and storage-related incidentsParticipate in on-call rotation to provide after-hours support for critical production systemsMaintain spare parts inventory and coordinate equipment procurement with vendorsProjectParticipate in capital projects involving process control system installations and upgradesInternal with EPC contractors, vendors, and internal stakeholders to ensure successful project executionDevelop project specifications, scope documents, and technical requirementsReview vendor designs and ensure alignment with site standards and operational requirementsConduct Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT)Ensure smooth transition from project delivery to operational supportAsset Management & DocumentationMaintain accurate records of all control system assets in the company asset registerEnsure system documentation is current and stored in appropriate knowledge repositoriesDevelop and update maintenance procedures, work instructions, and troubleshooting guidesMaintain version control for PLC programs, SCADA applications, and configuration filesDocument system changes through proper change management processesCreate training materials to support operations and maintenance personnelWork collaboratively with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams to understand process requirementsLiaise with vendors and service providers to resolve technical issues and optimize support arrangementsProvide technical guidance and mentoring to less experienced engineers and techniciansParticipate in incident investigations and contribute technical expertise to resolution effortsCommunicate technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical audiencesSupport the Superintendent in planning, scheduling, and prioritizing work activitiesSafety & ComplianceEnsure all work complies with PLS safety policies, procedures, and Life Saving RulesConduct risk assessments for control system modifications and installationsImplement appropriate security controls and access management for control systemsFollow PLS Technology methodologies including request, change, and problem managementParticipate in safety initiatives and contribute to a proactive safety cultureReport and investigate near misses, incidents, and hazardsABOUT YOU:Tertiary qualification in Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Automation, Mechatronics, or related disciplinePossession of a current Class C Driver's LicensePractical experience in the design, implementation, and support of process control systemsMinimum 3 years' experience in PLC programming and SCADA developmentExperience supporting control systems in a 24/7 production environmentDemonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex control system issuesMining/processing industry experience preferredPLC & Automation Platforms:Rockwell systems and applications (FactoryTalk View, Historian, Asset Centre)Experience with drives, VFDs, and motor control systemsSCADA & HMI Development:Design and development of operator interfacesAlarm management and rationalizationTrending and historical data configurationGood understanding of networking topology and protocols (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, MQTT, OPC)Experience with industrial switches, firewalls, and network architectureKnowledge of ring, star, and redundant network topologiesMES & Data
