Special Counsel, Regulatory Legal See yourself in our team The Legal and Group Secretariat team provides expert advice and assistance to the Group to achieve its strategic goals and priorities, including by identifying and appropriately managing legal and regulatory risks. The Regulatory Legal team provides strategic legal advice on significant regulatory and enforcement matters with ASIC, APRA and other regulators, including leading the Group’s responses to regulators on enforcement investigations and regulatory legal proceedings. Do work that matters The Special Counsel, Regulatory Legal is a senior legal role responsible for providing expert, strategic and risk‑focused legal advice on complex regulatory matters. The role leads high‑impact regulatory engagements, investigations and proceedings. Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: Regulatory Advice & Investigations Lead the legal strategy for complex and sensitive regulatory matters, including enforcement investigations and proceedings. Provide legal advice and guidance on regulatory matters, enforcement risks, and strategy. Conduct and oversee legal analysis on issues arising from regulatory responses, including assessing risk, liability exposure and appropriate remediation steps. Regulatory Proceedings & Litigation Lead regulatory litigation/enforcement proceedings, including managing evidence, court documentation, counsel briefings and hearing preparation. Oversee management of external legal firms engaged on regulatory matters. Stakeholder Engagement Lead proactive engagement with regulators, ensuring high‑quality, timely responses and fostering constructive regulator relationships. Provide senior-level insights and briefings to Executives, Risk, BU stakeholders and Board/Committee audiences where required. Team Leadership & Development Providing coaching, technical guidance and supervision to other lawyers in the team. Role‑model CBA values and support a high‑performance, collaborative team culture. Develop team capability, oversee matter quality, and contribute to practice group initiatives. Governance, Reporting & Continuous Improvement Contribute to Regulatory Legal reporting, including emerging risks, due diligence queries and internal updates. Identify opportunities for process optimisation, improved regulator engagement practices, and knowledge‑sharing across L&GS. Maintain and enhance templates, precedents and knowledge repositories. We’re interested in hearing from people who have: 15 years post‑admission experience in regulatory law, financial services, or complex commercial litigation. Deep expertise in regulatory enforcement investigations and proceedings. Strong understanding of ASIC/APRA frameworks, significant regulatory matters, and the Group Regulatory Engagement Standard. Substantial knowledge and demonstrated experience in leading responses to complex regulatory and legal investigations and proceedings, and regulatory engagement across a large organisation Strong influencing and stakeholder‑management skills across complex environments. Ability to engage effectively with regulators and represent the Group in sensitive matters. Strategic thinker with sound judgement and an ability to operate independently at a senior level. Resilient, agile, and able to manage competing priorities in high‑pressure environments. Strong written and verbal communication, including preparation of executive‑level materials.
