The Senior Ecologist Urban Biodiversity leads a small, highly collaborative team of ecologists that specialise in developing mapping products, tools and the provision of scientific advice to underpin and promote evidence-based management, policy and decision-making for the conservation of ACT's urban biodiversity. The team collaborates closely with stakeholders both within and external to government, and provides advice into a wide range of ACT Government approvals, licensing, operational and planning processes such as:
* Urban development and placemaking
* Biodiversity sensitive urban design
* Cross-tenure restoration of urban ecological connectivity, including through delivery of the Urban Forest Strategy
* Cross-government policy and planning, including revision of the Nature Conservation Act, the Nature Conservation Strategy, the Urban Open Space Management Plan, and a range of associated practice and Conservator guidelines.

Eligibility/Other requirements:
Mandatory:
* Tertiary qualifications in ecology, environmental science, natural resource management or similar field.
* At least 5 years' experience in ecological research and monitoring and/or ecological advice provision, including program management.
* Current manual driver's licence.
* Current First Aid Certificate (or willingness to obtain one).
* A willingness to work independently in the field, outside normal hours in remote locations and in adverse weather conditions.
Highly Desirable:
* Experience in government environment/NRM agencies.
Note: This is a temporary position available from 20 April 2026 to 19 February 2027, with the possibility of extension up to 12 months. An order of merit will be established from this selection process and may be used to fill future identical vacancies over the next 12 months.

This position is part of an activity-based working (ABW) arrangement. Under ABW arrangements, officers will not have a designated workstation/desk.
Opportunities for flexible working options could include hybrid working, being a combination of working from home, designated office based and FlexiSpace working locations across the ACT, part-time hours, job-sharing, flexible start, and finish times.
