HarperCollins Publishers is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated team player to join our HQ publishing department as a Commissioning Editor on a 12-month parental leave relief basis. The main purpose of this role is to acquire, and project manage high quality fiction titles for the HQ trade list. Responsibilities (include but are not limited to): · Managing the publication of books to fill specific publishing slots set by the Head of Publishing across the print list · Acquiring books by originating ideas, maintaining awareness of trends and sales data, pursuing opportunities and developing relationships within the publishing community. · Providing support in project management to the Head of Publishing · Advocating for authors and supporting them through the publishing process from acquisition to beyond publication. · Reading and responding to submissions in a timely and professional manner The role will suit a highly motivated individual with strong editorial skills and an understanding of trade publishing, especially fiction. Essential Skills and Experience: · Minimum three years’ commissioning experience in-house · Understanding of current markets and trends, combined with entrepreneurial approach. · Two years’ experience of developmental and structural editing. · Strong verbal and written skills, including copy-writing ability · Publishing industry knowledge and high level of literacy · Highly motivated, proactive person with strong sense of initiative · Empathy, diplomacy and good communication skills for author, agent and in-house liaison · Proofreading – high-level skills to maintain accuracy and consistency Please note some evening work and interstate travel may be required.
