The Role
Create original, accurate, and captivating digital journalism for ABC News Story Lab—collaborate across teams to innovate and engage audiences on key stories.
The Job
* Research, report, and produce interactive digital stories for ABC News platforms, apps, and social media.
* Generate ideas, research, and contribute to editorial discussions in deadline‑driven teams.
* Stay current on news, expand contacts, and foster source networks.
* Create original public‑interest journalism and enhance key story coverage.
* Contribute to both short‑turnaround stories and longer‑term editorial projects.
* Track emerging digital audience issues to shape innovative content.
* Foster creativity and excellence while reflecting Australia's diversity.
* Engage communities for relevant stories aligned with News strategy.
* Uphold ABC Values, policies, style guides, and editorial standards.
About You
You are a strong communicator, team‑oriented, and open to feedback, able to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines for both short‑ and long‑term projects.
* Relevant tertiary qualifications or equivalent skills and experience in digital journalism.
* Strong ability to generate original, impactful stories and contribute to editorial discussions.
* Skilled in pitching, researching, reporting, and producing accurate digital stories under deadlines.
* Experience as a creative storyteller in visual, interactive, data‑driven, and multimedia formats.
* Ability to simplify complex information into clear, engaging digital journalism.
* Familiar with digital production tools, workflows, and platforms; eager to learn new skills.
* Understanding of audience needs, digital consumption, and engagement with visual/interactive content.
* Proven ability to build and maintain contacts, including in diverse and underserved communities.
* Advantageous skills: data journalism, computational journalism, verification, information design.
