Job Title: Principal Legal Officer, Commercial Law
Job Responsibilities
Principal Legal Officers (PLOs) in the Commercial Law Section are subject matter experts responsible for supervising and second counselling lawyers in their team.
They manage and take personal carriage of matters of a more technical or sensitive level, ensuring tasks are finalized and issues are driven forward. PLOs navigate complexity through effective stakeholder engagement, clear communication, and subject matter knowledge. They exercise a pragmatic approach to problem-solving and provide exceptional customer service for their clients.
PLOs are responsible for leading a team, developing staff, setting goals, and driving performance through effective performance management. They appropriately delegate work and measure performance. In this role, PLOs work collaboratively with three other PLOs in Commercial Law, managing workflow, reporting, and contributing to team and department meetings.
They also work closely with SES to ensure appropriate briefing and escalation, ensuring the team is supported.
Qualifications
Essential qualifications for this role include a degree in law from an Australian university or a comparable overseas degree recognized in Australia for admission to practice. A Practising Certificate or eligibility to attain one is required, along with at least three years of post-qualification experience. The ideal candidate should have specialised knowledge and experience in commercial law advisory work, preferably including experience in government procurement and contracting, grants, and property. High-quality management and leadership skills are important for effective management and development of senior legal officers and legal officers.
Strong technical legal advice writing, second counselling, and research skills are required. The candidate should possess sophisticated relationship management, communication, and negotiation skills to develop productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders and provide excellent client service. The ability to work under pressure, be agile, flexible, and responsive to managing competing priorities and tight timeframes is essential.
Salary
Salary Information: The position offers a salary range from $157, to $177, plus % super, with part time pro-rata options available.
Additional Information
This is an ongoing (permanent), full-time position with flexible working arrangements that can be negotiated according to the organisation's Enterprise Agreement and the operational requirements of the role. The opportunity is available across multiple locations in Australia, including ACT, NSW, NT, QLD, SA, TAS, VIC, and WA. The process is used to fill two immediate positions, and applicants suitable for the role but not offered the position may be placed in a merit list or pool to fill similar vacancies for up to 18 months.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the position, candidates must be Australian Citizens. The successful candidate will be required to obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting Level 1 (AGSVA) security clearance.
Additionally, ABF Workers must obtain and maintain an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC), and Home Affairs Workers must obtain and maintain an Onboarding Check. In certain circumstances, an Employment Suitability Clearance (ESC) may be required in addition to, or in lieu of, an Onboarding Check.
