Role Overview The Coordinator Waste Management leads the delivery and strategic oversight of Council's waste and recycling services, including kerbside collection, landfill and transfer station operations. The role ensures compliance with environmental legislation, manages contractors and assets, and drives key projects such as landfill conversions and waste levy implementation. It also involves supervising staff, responding to community issues like illegal dumping, and preparing reports, policies, and grant submissions. Your responsibilities will include: Waste Operations & Contract Management Oversee the delivery of kerbside waste and recycling collection services, landfill and transfer station operations. Manage contractor performance to ensure services meet operational standards, safety requirements, and environmental compliance. Supervise waste infrastructure sites, including condition monitoring, maintenance oversight, and service improvement. Strategic Planning & Compliance Develop and implement the region's Waste Management Strategy in line with corporate goals and state regulations. Review and maintain key planning documents such as the Asset Management Plan, Asset Register, Improvement Plans, and Risk Management Plans. Coordinate responses to environmental authority requirements and ensure Council facilities comply with all legislative obligations. Service Innovation & Community Impact Lead waste management projects, such as the conversion of landfills into transfer facilities or upgrades to existing infrastructure. Monitor and respond to illegal dumping and littering across the region, implementing programs to deter and reduce incidents. Represent Council in discussions with regulators, industry groups, and neighbouring Councils on waste management issues. Reporting, Analysis & Policy Development Draft high-quality reports and briefings on waste-related topics for executive and elected officials. Track and analyse service performance, costs, and community outcomes to drive data-informed improvements. Contribute to the development of policies and procedures that underpin a safe, effective, and future-ready waste service. Leadership & Project Delivery Lead and support a dedicated team, overseeing recruitment, training, performance management, and staff development. Coordinate funding applications for waste-related grants and deliver reporting and acquittals for grant-funded projects. Manage operational budgets, forecasting, and financial reporting for the Waste Management portfolio. What You'll Bring: Relevant tertiary qualifications in Environmental Management, Sustainability, Public Health, or a related field or equivalent career experience. Proven leadership experience in waste operations, contract supervision, and team development. In-depth knowledge of legislation, licensing, and compliance requirements in the waste sector. Strong planning, communication, and reporting skills with the ability to manage multiple projects. Confidence in engaging with regulators, the public, and internal teams to build trust and ensure accountability. Sound computer and data management skills, particularly with MS Office and asset or project management tools. A current Class C driver's licence.
