We have an exciting opportunity for a permanent full-time Principal Engineer Design Management to join the Transport Delivery Branch within the Council.
The Principal Engineer - Design Management leads a civil design team to deliver high‑quality road, drainage, and infrastructure designs for the Capital Works Program, providing strong technical leadership and supervising up to nine staff. The role oversees internal and consultant‑led design projects, ensures compliance with legislative and industry standards, and drives efficient, timely delivery of design documentation. It also supports stakeholder engagement, continuous improvement, and alignment with Transport Delivery Branch objectives.
Position responsibilities include:
* Design Management
o Lead and manage civil engineering design teams.
o Scope, certify, and oversee designs for roads, drainage, and infrastructure projects.
o Commission and manage external consultants for capital works.
o Manage CAD systems and land/easement acquisition.
* Leadership & Teamwork
o Engage stakeholders early to ensure alignment and support.
o Support and mentor the design team to foster growth.
o Identify training needs and support team development.
o Provide technical input and leadership across projects.
o Develop and update design standards and policies.
* Contribute to budgeting, business planning, and continuous improvement initiatives.
* Identify and manage risks, support quality assurance, and drive innovation across the design program.
Key indicators for success:
* Strong teamwork, relationship‑building and communication skills.
* Adaptable, critical thinker with a commitment to continuous learning.
* Degree in Civil Engineering; RPEQ registered or eligible.
* Extensive experience in civil design, drafting and project management.
* Skilled in AutoCAD, 12D, PC Drain and MS Project (advantage).
* Proven leadership and ability to manage and motivate technical teams.
* Strong organisational, decision‑making and stakeholder engagement skills.
* Experience managing consultants and delivering multiple design projects.
* Bachelor's degree in civil engineering with extensive experience.
* Eligibility or registration as a Professional Engineer (RPEQ) under the Queensland Professional Engineers Act.
* Project Management qualifications and experience managing complex design programs.
* Ability to pass all pre-employment and background checks as required.
