Position Information

The Assistant Principal Inclusion and Support is a strategic, full time (face to face teaching 0.8 FTE), leadership role dedicated to inclusion, with a focus on facilitating improvement in the learning, wellbeing and independence of students with disabilities.

The Assistant Principal Inclusion and Support shares the broader educational imperatives of the Assistant Principal position but with the explicit focus of driving improved outcomes for students with disability, providing a leadership role in mentoring staff across the school to support students with disability and building collaborative relationships with families of students with disability.

The role is located in mainstream primary schools with seven or more support classes.

Smithfield Public School is in the Fairfield school area of the Metropolitan South and West Performance Directorate. It is one of the first national schools established in 1850. There are approximately 586 students enrolled P–6. This includes a preschool, an Opportunity Class, an Early Intervention program and 6 classes for students with disabilities. Smithfield Public School also hosts a satellite class from ASPECT, the governing body for people with Autism. Students come from a diverse range of language backgrounds approximating 84% of the student population. Of these students, 74% have English as an additional language and there are several students who are New Arrivals. The New Arrivals are largely Arabic and Assyrian speakers from Iraq and Syria. Over 30 languages are represented in the school community, with Arabic, Assyrian and Vietnamese being the largest groups. 31 students identify as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) are supported by a strong commitment to ATSI education. Selection Criteria

In addition to the general selection criteria:

1. Demonstrated expertise and proven successful experience in supporting students with disability, which may include relevant qualifications in inclusion or special education.

2. Demonstrated ability to promote research based impactful professional learning that ensures the continual development and growth of teacher expertise in learning and wellbeing growth for students with disability through evidence informed practice and high expectations.

3. Demonstrated ability to interpret and analyse student data to develop differentiated practice and student improvement.

4. Demonstrated ability to implement, monitor and make reasonable adjustments in collaboration with students, families, staff and allied health professionals to maximise learning and wellbeing outcomes for students with disability.

5. Demonstrated ability to develop the capacity of colleagues' work with colleagues to plan, teach and evaluate for inclusion and equity.


General Selection Criteria

1. Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice
2. Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs
3. Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams
4. Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents
5. Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning
6. Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policy


Conditions

An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.
