About the role
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) is establishing a merit pool for Senior Medical Officers within the Client Services Centre Branch.
A Senior Medical Officer undertakes aviation medical assessments for pilots and air traffic controllers and provides expert clinical advice and decision-making within CASA's regulatory framework. The role involves applying advanced clinical expertise to assess medical risk and determine fitness for safety‐critical aviation duties.
The role may require occasional interstate travel.
Key responsibilities
* Undertake complex aviation medical certificate assessments, including review of clinical information, specialist reports and operational risk considerations.
* Manage complex or non‐routine certification cases requiring advanced clinical judgement where established guidance may not fully apply.
* Prepare clear certification determinations and correspondence outlining medical reasoning, conditions, surveillance requirements and follow‐up actions.
* Liaise with applicants, Designated Aviation Medical Examiners (DAMEs), and treating practitioners to obtain clinical information.
* Provide professional medical recommendations aligned with aviation legislation, medical certification standards and CASA regulatory policies.
* Contribute to complex case discussions.
* Provide clinical guidance, mentoring and professional support to Aviation Medical Officers, contributing to capability development within the medical team.
* Contribute expert clinical input to the development, interpretation and continuous improvement of aviation medical standards, practices and certification procedures.
* Contribute to research, analysis and educational initiatives aligned with CASA priorities where required.
* Engage with regulated entities and aviation stakeholders to provide medical and technical advice.
* Other duties as required.
Ideal Candidate
* Experience in aviation medical assessment or comparable fitness‐for‐duty decision‐making in safety‐critical environments.
* Strong clinical judgement, analytical skills and ability to manage complex certification decisions.
* Highly developed communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
* Experience managing complex clinical information and preparing clear medical opinions.
* Experience contributing to peer review and clinical governance.
* Strong understanding of, or demonstrated ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of aviation medicine, civil aviation legislation, and relevant national and international aviation standards.
* Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
