About the Role
The Aboriginal Economic Development (AED) team focuses on strong cultural partnerships and supporting regional Aboriginal business employment and training aspirations. The AED team consists of a large cohort of Aboriginal staff who are regionally located and connected to the communities they support.
As a key part of the team an Aboriginal Economic Development Manager is responsible for the advancement of Aboriginal communities in regional NSW through place‑based, culturally solid, and Aboriginal‑led economic development activities.
The Manager works directly with Aboriginal‑owned and operated businesses, Local Aboriginal Land Councils (LALCs), Aboriginal Controlled Community Organisations (ACCOs) and Aboriginal people to improve economic outcomes in Regional NSW, focusing on NSW Closing the Gap Priority Reform 5 (Employment, Business Growth and Economic Prosperity).
About You
This is an identified role under Section 14d of the Anti‑Discrimination Act 1977 and as such Aboriginality is an essential requirement of the role. Aboriginal‑identified positions are developed where Aboriginal identity, cultural knowledge or connections are a genuine aspect of the role. Positions are specifically noted under the provisions of the NSW Anti-Discrimination Act (1977) for Aboriginal people who meet the following criteria:
- Is of Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander descent.
- Identifies as an Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander person.
- Is accepted as such by the Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander community.
Additionally you will have:
- Demonstrated experience in supporting and advocating for place‑based Aboriginal ways of working within regional and economic development contexts.
- Proven ability to develop and maintain respectful partnerships with Aboriginal businesses, organisations and communities informed by a deep understanding of their aspirations.
- Demonstrated capability in working across government to enable economic advancement for Aboriginal communities in regional NSW.
- Knowledge of NSW Closing the Gap Priority Reform 5 and experience in strengthening the capacity of Aboriginal businesses and organisations to align with its key action areas.
- Skills and experience in designing and implementing regional strategies and initiatives that drive growth in Aboriginal‑owned businesses and create sustainable economic opportunities.
