Primary objective
Work collaboratively with classroom teachers with the teaching, care and management of students with moderate to severe
disabilities through contributing to the planning and implementation of innovative and individualised programs, the use of
augmentative adapted communication devices, lifting devices, mobility devices and other equipment and providing feedback to
the teacher.
Context statement
Acacia Hill School, located in Alice Springs, is the only special school in Central Australia, and has an enrolment of approximately
115 students ranging from Preschool to Year 12. Over 80% of students need support with communication. The school's highly
specialized learning and wellbeing programs cater developmentally for students with intellectual disability or multiple complex
disabilities using the Early Years Learning Framework, the pre-foundation Victorian Curriculum and the Australian Curriculum.
The school is committed to fostering learning without limits for every student.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Actively participate as a team member in the planning, preparation, implementation and assessment of individualised
educational programs and undertake instructional tasks as required in classroom activities, outdoor activities and excursions.
Assist with the supervision of students at recess and lunch as required.
1. Undertake healthcare tasks including personal care such as feeding and toileting, administer first aid and provide medication
to students in accordance with school policies. This includes complex medication and personal care procedures.
1. Develop and effectively maintain appropriate working relationships with students with disability, families, work colleagues
and stakeholders whilst maintaining confidentiality.
1. Manage and complete a range of administrative tasks including word processing, photocopying, bookbinding, laminating,
classroom displays and SAMS entry in a timely manner.
1. Create classroom/student resources utilising specific computer software programs (e.g., Boardmaker, Clicker 6) to implement
programs such as Structured Teaching.
1. Initiate, prioritise and perform work tasks, under limited supervision and in a reliable manner, whilst adhering to school and
Dept Education and Training policies in an environment of ongoing change and pressure, where student and staff safety are
paramount.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Recent demonstrated experience successfully implementing educational programs for students who have significantly below
average intellectual functioning, multiple needs, challenging behaviours, and who have deficits in adaptive functioning in
areas such as communication, self-care, social/interpersonal skills and functional academic skills.
1. Proven ability to communicate effectively using various communication strategies and appropriate interpersonal skills with
children who have a diverse range of disabilities.
1. Demonstrated experience working collaboratively in teams and communicating effectively to support productive
partnerships with families and other stakeholders.
1. Demonstrated experience in undertaking a range of administrative tasks by meeting timeframes whilst working under
pressure and in an environment of change.
Desirable
1. Cert III or Cert IV related to supporting students with disability in educational settings.
2. Driving Licence.
3. Current AUSTSWIM accreditation.
