Technical Director – Primary OR Secondary & Protection HV Substations Power & Electrification Sydney or Melbourne $250,000 – $300,000 Super DOE Senior Leadership Roles Are you a senior Primary Substation Design Engineer, Principal Primary Engineer, Principal Protection Engineer, Secondary Systems Engineer, Protection & Control Lead, Technical Director, or recognised HV Substation Design SME ready for a bigger leadership opportunity? We are currently recruiting two separate senior technical leadership roles with a fast-growing national engineering consultancy that is expanding its Power & Electrification capability across Australia. These are confidential appointments and represent a rare opportunity to step into highly visible Technical Director roles across major power, grid, renewable energy, data centre, transmission, distribution and energy-transition projects. The two roles are: 1. Technical Director – Primary Focused on primary substation design, HV equipment, primary plant, switchyards, layouts, earthing, clearances and design assurance. 2. Technical Director – Secondary & Protection Focused on secondary systems, protection and control, relay protection, SCADA, substation automation, IEC 61850, control panels, wiring, schemes and commissioning interfaces. Both roles can be based in Sydney or Melbourne. Why These Roles Are Different These are not just senior design delivery roles. Work across transmission, distribution, renewables, grid connection, utilities, data centres, industrial infrastructure and major energy projects. Engage directly with utilities, developers, government agencies, EPCs and major infrastructure clients. Support proposals, bids, client relationships and work-winning. Help build a stronger, more scalable national technical capability. Role 1: Technical Director – Primary The Opportunity The Technical Director – Primary will lead and strengthen primary substation design capability across complex HV substation, grid connection, transmission, distribution, renewable energy and infrastructure projects. This role is focused on the physical high-voltage infrastructure within substations and switchyards. You will act as a senior technical authority across: Primary substation design HV substation design High-voltage equipment Primary plant Switchyards AIS / GIS substations Substation layouts Transformers Circuit breakers Disconnectors and isolators Busbars HV cables and terminations Earthing systems Lightning protection Electrical clearances Equipment specifications Utility standards Design assurance and technical governance What You’ll Be Doing As Technical Director – Primary, your role will include: Acting as a recognised technical authority for primary substation design. Leading and guiding complex primary design packages. Reviewing, challenging and approving technical design deliverables. Ensuring designs are safe, compliant, buildable, maintainable and commercially practical. Providing technical direction across HV equipment, layouts, clearances, earthing and primary plant interfaces. Supporting feasibility, concept design, detailed design, construction support and commissioning phases. Working closely with secondary systems, protection, civil, structural, environmental, survey and project management teams. Mentoring junior, intermediate and senior engineers. Helping build a stronger national primary design capability. Supporting client engagement, proposals, bids and work-winning. Representing the business in technical discussions, design reviews, workshops and client meetings. About You This role would suit someone currently operating as a: Technical Director – Primary Principal Primary Engineer Lead Primary Engineer Principal Substation Engineer HV Substation Design Lead Primary Design Manager Substation Technical Lead Principal Electrical Engineer – Power Primary Substation Design SME You will likely bring: A degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent. Around 15 years’ experience in substation design, HV infrastructure or power engineering. Strong experience in primary substation design. Technical depth across HV equipment, layouts, clearances, earthing and primary plant. Experience across transmission, distribution, utilities, renewables, industrial or infrastructure projects. Ability to lead complex design packages and review technical deliverables. Strong understanding of utility standards, Australian Standards and design assurance. Confidence mentoring engineers and building technical capability. Strong communication skills and client-facing credibility. Commercial awareness across scope, cost, schedule, risk and quality. Experience across 132kV, 220kV, 275kV, 330kV or 500kV environments would be highly regarded. Role 2: Technical Director – Secondary & Protection The Opportunity The Technical Director – Secondary & Protection will lead and strengthen secondary systems and protection design capability across complex HV substation, grid connection, transmission, distribution, renewable energy and infrastructure projects. This role is focused on the control, monitoring, automation and protection systems within substations and power infrastructure. You will act as a senior technical authority across: Secondary systems Protection and control Protection systems Protection relays Relay settings Protection schemes Protection coordination Control systems SCADA Substation automation IEC 61850 RTUs and IEDs Protection panels Control panels Wiring diagrams Schematic diagrams Logic diagrams Trip circuits Metering and alarms Communications interfaces Testing and commissioning support Utility protection standards Design assurance and technical governance What You’ll Be Doing As Technical Director – Secondary & Protection, your role will include: Acting as a recognised technical authority for secondary systems and protection design. Leading and guiding complex secondary and protection design packages. Reviewing, challenging and approving technical design deliverables. Ensuring designs are safe, compliant, reliable, coordinated and commercially practical. Providing technical direction across protection schemes, relay settings, control systems, SCADA, automation, panels, wiring and communications interfaces. Supporting feasibility, concept design, detailed design, construction support and commissioning phases. Working closely with primary design, power systems, civil, structural, environmental, survey and project management teams. Mentoring junior, intermediate and senior engineers. Helping build a stronger national secondary and protection capability. Supporting client engagement, proposals, bids and work-winning. Representing the business in technical discussions, design reviews, workshops and client meetings.
